Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 03/28/13 and Tuesday, 04/02/13. ART BUILDING, 2301 San Jacinto Boulevard Burglary of a Building: Some unknown subject or subjects entered an unsecured classroom and broke a power cable from its bracket and stole it. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between 3-27-13, at 4:00 PM and 4-01-13 at 8:00 AM. GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS BUILDING, 100 East 21st Street Harassment: A UT staff member reported she had received a number of harassing calls form an unknown caller. Occurred between 3-29-13, at 3:00 PM and 4-01-13 at 8:57 AM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A black Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unattended inside a gym bag next to the basketball courts located on the 3rd level. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on 3-28-13, between 3:00 PM and 5:28 PM. BEAUFORD H. JESTER CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A white Apple iPhone was reported stolen after being left unattended in the Jester food court area. Loss value: $420.00. Occurred on 4-01-13, between 3:15 PM and 4:00 PM. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Ave Theft: A gold colored Eastman saxophone, case, and mouth piece were stolen from an unsecured 3rd floor locker. During the investigation, the officer learned the locker had not been secured properly. Loss value: $2,900.00. Occurred between: 3-30-13, and 3-31-13. 100 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Public Intoxication / Warrant Arrest: A UT student discovered a group of students in the Welch courtyard. Some of the students were attempting to assist an intoxicated female. The officers detected alcohol on the breath of all of the students and learned they had been celebrating Easter. The intoxicated student believed she was at another building several blocks away from her current location. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. As the investigation continued, the officers soon learned one of the students had an arrest warrant issued for him by UTPD. The student was taken into custody for the warrant and all so transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-01-13, at 12:37 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students, standing next to a church with their backs to the street, watering the wall. During the investigation, the officer learned the students had been to a local downtown establishment and had consumed alcoholic beverages. The officer learned the students were under the legal age of 21. The students were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 3-29-13, at 3:31 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated / Failure to Stop: A UT Police Officer heard a vehicle horn blowing and as the officer approached a non-UT subject stopped the officer and stated he had been hit by the driver of the vehicle behind him. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the driver of the second vehicle. The driver informed the officer she had consumed only two beers. When asked if she had hit anyone, she informed the officer, “only a curb.” The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Test. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was charged with Failure to Stop. Occurred on: 3-31-13, at 2:47 AM, no deer were injured. 3800 BLOCK RED RIVER Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a truck travelling left of center on a divided roadway. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. When informed why he was being stopped, the driver informed the officer he “Had too much to drink.” The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Test to the driver. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-31-13, at 3:22 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Theft: A UT student reported losing her wallet shortly after leaving her dormitory room. During the investigation, the officer leaned the wallet had been turned in to the front desk at Kinsolving by an unidentified subject. When the owner retrieved her wallet, she discovered $270.00 had been removed. Loss value: $270.00. Occurred on: 3-24-13. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Burglary of Habitation: A black Lenovo laptop computer was reported stolen after being left inside an unsecured 8th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had left the room unlocked for his roommate. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between: 3-26-13 and 3-27-13. Crime Prevention Tip: We all like being nice and helping others when we can. However there are times when doing so puts you at a disadvantage. Leaving your room unlocked so your roommate can get in puts you at the disadvantage when criminals know your habits. 2600 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a blue Scion run through two intersections controlled by red lights. At the second intersection, the non-UT driver stopped in the middle of the intersection and proceeded to back-up through the intersection. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The driver informed the officer she had consumed two Mexican Martinis and referred to the drinks as “a few.” The officer learned, “a few” meant four or five drinks. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Test to the driver. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-28-13, at 3:20 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 89 Alarm Reports, 6 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious People Reports, 1 Lost/Found Property Report, 1 Sick Person Call, 1 Inventory Loss/Shortage Report, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 4 Unsecured Door Reports between 3/28/13 and 4/02/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
