Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 04/03/13 and Thursday, 04/04/13. GATEWAY APARTMENT, 1618 West 6th Street Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had deflated three of her tires on her vehicle. While airing her tires up, the student discovered two small holes in the sidewall of the tires. After repairing the tires, the student discovered someone had returned and flattened the rear tires of her vehicle again. Loss value: $300.00. Discovered on: 4-06-13, at 9:22 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a first floor window had been cracked. Estimated damage: $200.00. Discovered on: 4-07-13, at 1:48 AM. LIVING LEARING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Ave Harassment: A UT student entered into an on-line adult chat room. The student was messaged and was asked to friend an unknown subject on Face Book then join the subject in a Skype session. During the session the student was asked to do certain things while on Skype. After several minutes, the person he was doing certain things for informed the student she was only 14 years of age. The person he was in the Skype session with then demanded money in order not to informed local law enforcement. The student disconnected, put everything away and notified the UT Police Department. Occurred on: 4-06-13, at 12:30 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is a new scam where the con artists are using social media to his / her benefit. This is not a remake of American Pie, but you never know who is watching and recording. MAIN BUILDING, 110 Inner Campus Dr. Failure to Identify / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer was informed an intoxicated UT student was putting her cigarettes out on other students attending the music event on the South Mall. A number of students pointed the student out to the officers as they approached and also pointed out the student’s friend. The officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and learned she had consumed 4 to 5 five beers. After providing the officers with a name and date of birth, the student was informed the officers could not find a Driver’s License issued to the student. When asked to re-verify her information, the student informed the officers her parents had instructed her to never answer any questions asked by the police. The student was informed of the following: she was being legal detained, and she was required to give her correct name and date of birth. Again the student refused since her parents had instructed her to never answer any questions by the police. The student was taken into custody and issued a court appearance citation for Failure to ID and Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 4-06-13, at 8:30 PM. 2100 BLOCK SAN ANTONIO STREET Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a gold colored Chrysler disregard a solid red light. During the traffic investigation, the backup officer observed a silver object that he recognized as a grinder. The grinder contained a small amount of marijuana. Both the grinder and the marijuana were confiscated. The officer soon discovered the subject who had been in possession of the marijuana filled grinder also had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for traffic violations. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrants and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken, the subject was issued a court appearance citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on: 4-04-13, at 1:10 AM. 2300 BLOCK GUADALUPE Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a Toyota travelling without its headlamps turned on. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath and noted the driver’s eyes were watery. The driver admitted he had consumed several beers and had taken a prescription narcotic. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-06-13, at 3:30 AM. 2300 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DR. Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject removing his shirt and shoes and throwing these items at a group of males that were standing around him. During the investigation, the officer learned the group had been drinking at several downtown establishments and had taken the E-bus back to Dobie Mall. The group was heading home when of the subjects wanted to argue about the direction they needed to be going. The officer detected the odor of alcohol on the breaths of all fours subject’s and noted several of the subjects were intoxicated. The subjects were allowed to use a “Life Line”, and contact a friend. Prior to the friend’s arrival, the shoeless and shirtless subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication when he began arguing with his friends. When the friend arrived a second subject refused to leave with him and was also taken into custody for Public Intoxication. Both subjects were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-07-13, at 2:59 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving Under the Influence by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a silver Hyundai commit several traffic violations including speeding and running a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver did not display enough clues that would have indicated he was intoxicated. The officer did learn the driver was under the legal age of 21. The driver was issued a court appearance citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 4-06-13, at 4:45 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 65 Alarm Reports, 3 Suspicious Person Reports, 3 Burned Out Light Reports, and 6 Unsecured Door Reports between 4/05/13 and 4/08/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
