Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 04/16/13 and Wednesday, 04/17/13. "If You See Something, Say Something" In light of the recent events in Boston, MA the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind all of you to be vigilant in your day to day activities. It is important to remember if you see something suspicious or out of place to report it, IMMEDIATELY. It's better that police and emergency services investigate suspicious activity and find no criminal activity, than to not know about it and something terrible happen. So, if you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious contact your local police department. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive April 21, 2013, to examine all aspects of the University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that The University of Texas at Austin Police Department meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation — a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence. As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 1:00 pm. The session will be conducted in the training room of the University of Texas at Austin Police Department located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr., Austin, TX 78705. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call (512) 232-5460 on Monday, April 22, 2013 between the hours of 10:00 am and 11:30am. Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards. A copy of the standards may be viewed at the University of Texas at Austin Police Department. The local UTPD contact is Lieutenant Amber Calvert, Accreditation Manager, (512) 232-9628. Persons wishing to offer written comments regarding the agency’s compliance to accreditation may write to Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Blvd, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 20155-6660. The CALEA Assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices, and other locations where compliance can be witnessed. Culpeper, Virginia Police Department Team Member: Ms. Denise Likenhoker Virginia Tech Police Department Once the CALEA assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accreditation status. Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which they were initially accredited. COMMUNICATION BUILDING B, 2405-B Whitis Ave Theft: A UT staff member discovered a black Sharp TV monitor had been removed from a wall mount. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 4-11-13 and 4-16-13. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1618 West 6th Street Theft: A red Serento mountain bicycle was reported stolen from a bike rack after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 4-16-13 between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A white Apple iPhone 5 was reported stolen. During the investigation, the officer learned the phone had been left unattended and unsecured on a bleacher next to the basketball court. The victim stated he had seen an unknown subject near his property prior to discovering it stolen. The unknown subject was described as: White male, muscular, 6-01, with short hair. Subject was last seen wearing black shorts and a blue shirt. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred between: 4-16-13 at 11:45 PM and 4-17-13, at 12:10 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Reports, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 3 Unsecured Door Reports between 4/16/13 and 4/17/13. Items with a serial number such as laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, electronics, and bikes are eligible. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
