Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 04/17/13 and Thursday, 04/18/13. "If You See Something, Say Something" In light of the recent events in Boston, MA the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind all of you to be vigilant in your day to day activities. It is important to remember if you see something suspicious or out of place to report it, IMMEDIATELY. It's better that police and emergency services investigate suspicious activity and find no criminal activity, than to not know about it and something terrible happen. So, if you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious contact your local police department. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive April 21, 2013, to examine all aspects of the University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that The University of Texas at Austin Police Department meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation — a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence. As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 1:00 pm. The session will be conducted in the training room of the University of Texas at Austin Police Department located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr., Austin, TX 78705. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call (512) 232-5460 on Monday, April 22, 2013 between the hours of 10:00 am and 11:30am. Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards. A copy of the standards may be viewed at the University of Texas at Austin Police Department. The local UTPD contact is Lieutenant Amber Calvert, Accreditation Manager, (512) 232-9628. Persons wishing to offer written comments regarding the agency’s compliance to accreditation may write to Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Blvd, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 20155-6660. The CALEA Assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices, and other locations where compliance can be witnessed. The assessors for this review are: Team Leader: Chief Dan Boring (Ret.) Culpeper, Virginia Police Department Team Member: Ms. Denise Likenhoker Virginia Tech Police Department Once the CALEA assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accreditation status. Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which they were initially accredited. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Fraud: A UT student placed an ad on-line on Craigslist. The student was offering to sell a used iPhone for $250.00. The student received an offer and the buyer began negotiations to have the phone sent to his girlfriend in another country. After agreeing on a price, and to use Pay Pal, the student put her phone in the mail. She was then contacted to wire $150.00 to Western Union to cover the “Custom’s fee” for her phone to enter the country. The money was sent. She was then contacted to send an additional $300.00 for a “Delivery fee.” At this point the student did not think the buyer was on the up and up. The student learned the Pay Pal accounts given to her were not valid accounts with Pay Pal. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred on: 4-14-13. Crime Prevention Tip: Scam Alert. This is a new twist to an existing scam. Only this time the criminal is making you believe everything is legitimate. When selling items on line put safeguards in place before making an offer. Establish your own pay accounts. Learn how those accounts will work and how payments are made. Never take things at face value. MANOR PARKING GARAGE, 2200 Red River Theft of Service / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject having a difficult time exiting the parking garage. The officer watched as the subject followed a vehicle out of the garage without paying for parking. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer he was having a difficult time paying and the machine had taken his credit card. The officer soon discovered the subject had 5 outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for various traffic offences. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrants and transported to Central Booking. No charges filed on the Theft of Service. Occurred on: 4-17-13, at 2:57 PM. UNKNOWN LOCATION Fraud: A UT student reported several unauthorized charges had been made on his credit card in Allen Texas. Loss value: $969.00. Occurred between: 4-03-13 and 4-05-13. REC SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A UT student discovered his Apple iPhone and wallet containing his credit cards, personal identification and a $100.00 bill were stolen after being left unattended. During the investigation, the officer learned the wallet and cellular telephone had been placed on a bench next to the basketball courts. The victim stated he had observed an unknown subject near his property before it turned up missing. The unknown subject was described as: black male, heavy set and approximately 5-09. The subject was last seen wearing a black beanie, black hoodie and black shorts. Loss value: $281.00. Occurred on: 4-17-13, between 8:50 PM and 9:00 PM. 2200 BLOCK GUADALUPE Possession of a Controlled Substance / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer detected the odor of burning marijuana and observed a subject standing next to a wall. The subject did not see the officer until the officer was approaching. The officer saw the subject drop a smoldering cigarette. The officer soon discovered the subject was in possession of a synthetic form of marijuana. The subject was taken into custody for the Possession of a Controlled Substance since it is now illegal to be in possession of synthetic marijuana. The officer also discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for Public Intoxication. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-17-13, at 8:30 AM. 2600 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Theft: A black Tren, foldable bicycle, was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of Kinsolving after being secured to the racks with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between: 4-15-13 and 4-16-13. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 25 Alarm Reports, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 3 Unsecured Door Reports between 4/17/13 and 4/18/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
