Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 04/18/13 and Friday, 04/19/13. "If You See Something, Say Something" In light of the recent events in Boston, MA the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind all of you to be vigilant in your day to day activities. It is important to remember if you see something suspicious or out of place to report it, IMMEDIATELY. It's better that police and emergency services investigate suspicious activity and find no criminal activity, than to not know about it and something terrible happen. So, if you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious contact your local police department. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive April 21, 2013, to examine all aspects of the University of Texas at Austin Police Department’s policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that The University of Texas at Austin Police Department meets the commission’s state- of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation — a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence. As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, April 22, 2013, at 1:00 pm. The session will be conducted in the training room of the University of Texas at Austin Police Department located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr., Austin, TX 78705. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone. The public may call (512) 232-5460 on Monday, April 22, 2013 between the hours of 10:00 am and 11:30am. Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with the CALEA standards. A copy of the standards may be viewed at the University of Texas at Austin Police Department. The local UTPD contact is Lieutenant Amber Calvert, Accreditation Manager, (512) 232-9628. Persons wishing to offer written comments regarding the agency’s compliance to accreditation may write to Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., 13575 Heathcote Blvd, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia 20155-6660. The CALEA Assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices, and other locations where compliance can be witnessed. The assessors for this review are: Team Leader: Chief Dan Boring (Ret.) Culpeper, Virginia Police Department Team Member: Ms. Denise Likenhoker Virginia Tech Police Department Once the CALEA assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accreditation status. Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting to continued compliance with those standards under which they were initially accredited. UNKNOWN LOCATION Fraud: A UT student reported several unauthorized charges had been made on the debit card of their student association. The student had possession of the debit card at the time of the fraudulent transactions. Loss value: $2,275.00. Occurred between: 03-18-13 and 03-19-13. UNKNOWN LOCATION Fraud: A UT student reported an unauthorized charge had been made on her credit card on-line. The student had possession of her debit card at the time of the fraudulent on-line transaction. Loss value: $339.00. Occurred on 04- 17-13, at 1:00 PM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Street Harassment: A UT Staff Member reported annoying prank phone calls that were sexual in nature. The caller called several times throughout the day. Occurred on 04-18-13. REC SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Blvd. Theft: A UT student discovered his Apple iPhone was stolen after being left unattended. During the investigation, the officer learned the cellular telephone had been placed on a bench next to the basketball courts. The victim stated he had played basketball with 3 male subjects. They were the only ones in the court area. One of the subjects left before everyone else. This individual stated his name was “Tony”. “Tony” was described as: black male, heavy set and approximately 5-09. The subject was last seen wearing a red t-shirt, and sandals with white socks. He matches the description of a theft suspect from a theft that occurred at the same location yesterday. Loss value: $260.00. Occurred on: 04-18-13, between 5:40 PM and 6:00 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Boulevard Theft: A UT Faculty Member placed his laptop on top of his vehicle as he was putting his belongings into the vehicle. He drove off forgetting about the laptop. The laptop was no longer on top of his vehicle once he remembered where he left it. The laptop was not turned in to the parking garage or UTPD. Occurred on 04-18-13, between 5:30 PM and 9:00 PM. 2605 WHITIS AVENUE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student walk into a parked van. He bounced off of it, into the roadway. The student then laid down on a set of stairs, by the sidewalk, on the south side of Kinsolving Dormitory. The officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from him. The student stated he had several alcoholic beverages before taking the E-Bus from downtown to campus. He was going to walk the rest of the way home. He was traveling in the wrong direction. He tried to phone a friend but was out of lifelines. He was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 04-19-13, at 2:53 AM. 1900 GUADALUPE STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student talking to a group of subjects. As he approached the group, they walked away. An SUV pulled up and the student jumped in the rear seat. He screamed at the driver to go. The officer had the student exit the vehicle. The student explained he was being followed by a group of subjects from a bus and nearly got in a fight. His eyes were bloodshot and he was talking very loud. The officer smelled alcohol emanating from his breath. The student received a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on 04-19-13, at 3:08 AM. 101 EAST 21ST STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Guard reported a female passed out on the curb. A UT Police Officer was able to wake her by sitting her upright. She stated she was 18 years old, she had 2 beers, she was still in high school, she lived off campus, and she lived in Jester Dormitory. She was discovered to actually be 21 years of age and a UT Student. EMS was called to the scene. She refused transport and treatment from EMS. She was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking for Public Intoxication. Occurred on 04-19-13, at 4:22 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Reports, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 2 Suspicious Mail/Package Reports, 1 Smell of Marijuana Report, 1 Burned Out Light Report, 1 Sick/Ill Person Call, 1 EMS Call, 2 Lost and Found Property Reports, 1 Key Assist Report, 1 False 911 Call, and 1 Unsecured Door Report between 04/18/13 and 04/19/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512- 232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
