Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 04/23/13 and Wednesday, 04/24/13. "If You See Something, Say Something" In light of the events in Boston, MA the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind all of you to be vigilant in your day to day activities. It is important to remember if you see something suspicious or out of place to report it, IMMEDIATELY. It's better that police and emergency services investigate suspicious activity and find no criminal activity, than to not know about it and something terrible happen. So, if you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious contact your local police department. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out during an event. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject did not know where he was, and was not able to communicate with the officers very well. The subject’s phone rang and the officers verified the subject was at the concert with his father. The officers released the subject to his father instead of filing charges. Occurred on: 4-23-13, at 9:50 PM. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Theft: A UT staff member discovered six Apple iPads had been stolen from a second floor room after being left on top of a table. Loss value: $3,000.00. Occurred between: 4-22-13 and 4-23-13. WEST MALL Assault: A UT student reported an unknown subject approached her. During a short conversation, the subject wanted the student to come home with him so they could engage in adult type activities. The student became offended and told the subject “NO.” The subject attempted to grab the student as she was leaving. The unknown subject was described as: 30 years of age, short hair, with stubble on his face. Subject was last seen wearing a dark zippered sweatshirt and blue jeans. Occurred on: 4-19-13, at 3:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Readers of Campus Watch are reminded to be aware of the surroundings in light of several unrelated incidents city-wide. Austin Police are investigating two recent reports of men attempting to lure minors into their vehicles, there was a theft from person call west of campus, and UT Police investigated the above assault by contact on the West Mall. The crimes and suspects all appear to be unrelated. Please see our website at http://www.utexas.edu/police/ for safety tips. 300 BLOCK EAST DEAN KEETON Theft: A black Cannondale CAAD cyclocross bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of ECJ. During the investigation, the officer learned the bike had been secured with a self-locking chain lock. Loss value: $1,620.00. Occurred on: 4-23-13, between 7:20 AM and 3:00 PM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Assist Outside Agency: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject was observed looking at bikes parked along San Jacinto Blvd. Officers located the subject and soon learned the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrants and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-23-13, at 2:04 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 Alarm Reports, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Persons Reports, 2 Medical Call, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 3 Unsecured Door Reports between 4/23/13 and 4/24/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
