Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 05/03/13 and Monday, 05/06/13. "If You See Something, Say Something" In light of the events in Boston, MA the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind all of you to be vigilant in your day to day activities. It is important to remember if you see something suspicious or out of place to report it, IMMEDIATELY. It's better that police and emergency services investigate suspicious activity and find no criminal activity, than to not know about it and something terrible happen. So, if you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious contact your local police department. AT&T CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Assault with Injuries: A UT staff member responded to a noise complaint inside a 4th floor hotel room. The staff member heard items being thrown inside the room and knocked on the door. A non-UT subject answered the door and told the staff member everything was ok and slammed the door. Responding officers knocked on the door and a shirtless non-UT subject answered the door. The subject stepped out in the hallway and informed the officers his girlfriend had hit him during an argument. The non-UT female informed the officers the injuries she had were from adult activities. Both subjects were taken into custody for Assault with Injuries and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-04-13, at 3:20 AM. MANOR PARKING GARAGE, 2017 Robert Dedman Dr. Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered the north exit sign had been destroyed after being pulled from its mounting bracket. Loss value: $150.00. Discovered on: 5-4-13, at 11:33 PM. ROBERT L. MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Burglary of Building: A UT student discovered her backpack containing a Dell laptop computer, TI-84 calculator, headphones and a textbook were stolen after being left inside a secured 15th floor lounge. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had taken the time to engrave her property with her DL number and recorded the serial numbers of her stolen property. Loss value: $805.00. Occurred on: 5-04-13, between 2:00 AM and 1:00 PM. 700 BLOCK CLYDE LITTLEFIELD Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: Officers responded to a report of a subject attempting to solicit tickets during the Lone Star Jam. During the investigation the officers located the subject and learned he had several outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 5-05-13, at 3:00 PM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana / Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer discovered a grey Pontiac stopped in the middle of the roadway facing the wrong direction. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The non-UT driver informed the officer he had been to several downtown establishments where he had consumed two beers. The subject then informed the officer he had contacted his sister to come and pick him up. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. The officer learned the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for a traffic violation. During a search of the subject’s vehicle, incidental to his arrest, officers located a plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance that was not oregano. The substance tested positive for Marijuana. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-05-13, at 2:07 AM. 2100 BLOCK UNIVERSITY AVE Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered lying on his back while passed out in the bushes. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the student’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The student did not know where he was or how he happened to be passed out in the bushes. The student was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-06-13, at 2:36 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 52 Alarm Reports, 1 Suspicious Person, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Burned Out Light Reports, and 1 Unsecured Door Report between 5/03/13 and 5/06/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
