Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 05/10/13 and Tuesday, 05/14/13. "If You See Something, Say Something" In light of the events in Boston, MA the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind all of you to be vigilant in your day to day activities. It is important to remember if you see something suspicious or out of place to report it, IMMEDIATELY. It's better that police and emergency services investigate suspicious activity and find no criminal activity, than to not know about it and something terrible happen. So, if you see something out of the ordinary or suspicious contact your local police department. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE Dear Friends, As we prepare for Commencement, I want to let you know about an important change related to security this year. Because of heightened security concerns after recent national events, additional safety procedures will be in place for upcoming Commencement ceremonies at The University of Texas at Austin. I hope you understand that the safety of our visitors and community is our highest concern and we appreciate your help with this. Backpacks, tote bags or any bags larger than 12 inches in any dimension will not be allowed into any of the Commencement venues. This applies to college, school and departmental ceremonies as well as the university-wide Commencement ceremony at the Tower. The current policy prohibiting coolers, picnic baskets, lawn chairs and large strollers also remains in effect. In addition, all other bags, including purses, camera cases and diaper bags will be searched by security officers before visitors are permitted to enter the South, Main, East and West Malls for the University-wide ceremony. These smaller bags are also subject to search at the college, school and departmental ceremonies. We strongly urge all attendees not to bring bags to any of the ceremonies unless they are absolutely necessary. Those visitors bringing smaller bags should expect delays in order to enter the venue and those with the prohibited larger bags will be turned away. Please plan accordingly and do not bring any packages that cannot be opened or inspected. These procedures should ensure that our Commencement ceremonies run smoothly and are memorable milestones for all of our graduates and their families. Thanks for your cooperation. Hook 'em, Bill Powers President LIBERAL ARTS BUILDING, 305 East 23rd Street Theft: A UT Student reported her black Lenovo Thinkpad stolen. She accidently left it unattended. When she returned to retrieve her property, it was missing. Loss Value: $1200.00. Occurred on 05/10/13, between 12:00 AM and 12:00 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Graffiti: A UT Student reported graffiti in the men’s restroom on the 6th floor. Some unknown subject or subjects used a black permanent marker to write on the toilet paper dispenser. Cost of clean-up: $50.00. Occurred between 04/30/13 and 05/10/13. 2200 GUADALUPE STREET Failure to Identify and Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT Subject passed out, on his stomach, in the middle of the sidewalk. The officer noted there was a “full moon” out. Once the officer was able to wake him, he stated he had been partying with his dad. He did not know his location. He smelled of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot, and his speech was slurred. He refused to give his name and date of birth. He was taken into custody and transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/11/13, at 2:02 AM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Graffiti: A UT Police Officer found that some unknown subject or subjects used purple spray paint to write on the south side of the parking garage. Observed on 05/11/13, at 8:07 AM. SERVICE BUILDING, 304 East 24th Street Theft: A UT Staff Member reported a UT vehicle, Orange/Black Kubota Diesel, had been stolen. Occurred between 05/10/13, 4:00 PM and 05/13/13, 7:30 AM. Loss value: $16,000. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 101 Alarm Reports, 5 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 2 Accidental Damage Reports, 1 EMS Call, 1 Welfare Concern Report, 3 Burned Out Light Reports, and 2 Key Assist Reports between 5/10/13 and 5/14/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512- 232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
