Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 05/24/13 and Tuesday, 05/28/13. 1800 TRINITY STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT Subject changing a shredded tire. The officer stopped to see if the subject needed assistance. The subject stated he was about to leave. The subject did not realize he had left several objects, from his trunk, on the ground. His speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot. He was off balanced when he exited his vehicle and staggered towards the curb. He stated he had 3 beers earlier in the night; he got a flat tire on I-35; he had previous DWI convictions; he was going to drive home. He was taken into custody and transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/25/13, at 12:25 AM. 2300 GUADALUPE STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a grey Nissan traveling without the headlights on. A traffic stop was initiated. The Non-UT Driver’s eyes were glossy and her speech was slurred. She consented to performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. It was determined she was driving while intoxicated. She was taken into custody and transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/25/13, at 1:35 AM. 300 EAST 23RD STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a black Honda traveling without the headlights on. A traffic stop was initiated. The Non-UT Driver’s speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot. He stated the vehicle belonged to his cousin and he did not know how to turn the headlights on. He stated he had consumed 2 beers prior to driving. He consented to performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. It was determined he was driving while intoxicated. He was taken into custody and transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/25/13, at 2:15 AM 2605 WHITIS AVENUE Criminal Mischief: A UT Staff Member reported a window had been broken out of a UT vehicle. Loss value: $250.00. Reported on 05/25/13, at 10:26 AM. 300 WEST MARTIN LUTHER KING JR BOULEVARD Driving While Intoxicated and Driving Without a License: A UT Police Officer observed a blue Dodge truck swerve side to side in its lane of travel and cross into the bicycle lane multiple times. A traffic stop was initiated. The Non-UT Driver stated he did not have a Texas Driver License. His eyes were bloodshot and his pupils were dilated. He consented to performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. It was determined he was driving while intoxicated. He was taken into custody and transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/26/13, at 2:00 AM. 3105 FRONTAGE ROAD Driving While Intoxicated and Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a blue Chevy SUV traveling without the headlights on. A traffic stop was initiated. The Non-UT Driver had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and his eyes were bloodshot. He also had evidence on his face and hands that he had been in a fight. His Non-UT passenger was sleeping in the back compartment. The driver consented to performing the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. It was determined he was driving while intoxicated. He was taken into custody and transferred to Central Booking. His passenger was determined to be intoxicated to the level she was a danger to herself or others. She was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transferred to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/27/13, at 1:46 AM. 201 EAST 21ST STREET Theft, Possession of Marijuana (2oz or Less), and Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of a suspicious person at a bike rack. The called advised she witnessed a man attempting to pry a bicycle off of the bike rack. When the officer arrived, she saw a man matching the caller’s description ride off on a bicycle. She initiated a traffic stop. As the Non-UT Subject got off the bicycle, he had a cut cable lock in his hand. The bicycle was determined to be stolen. During a search incidental to arrest, marijuana and a cordless saw were found on his person. He was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/27/13, at 8:43 AM. ETTER-HARBIN ALUMNI CENTER, 2100 San Jacinto Boulevard Theft: A Non-UT Subject reported her black Apple iPhone 4 stolen at an event she attended. Loss Value: $100.00. Occurred on 05/26/13, at 11:30 PM. 702 COLORADO STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer responded to a call of a female passed out on the sidewalk. The Non-UT Subject was found on the ground with her purse open and her cell phone lying by her leg. She did not know where she was. She stated she was the designated driver for the evening, but was coerced into drinking, by her friends, who had abandoned her. She tried to phone a friend but she wasn’t able to contact anyone. Her friends took her car keys and left without her. She was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on 05/28/13, at 1:22 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 67 Alarm Reports, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Burned Out Light Report, 1 Animal Call Report, 3 Unsecured Door Reports, 1 Lost and Found Property Report, 1 Assist Other Agency Report, 1 Smell of Smoke Report, 1 False 911 Call, and 2 Key Assist Calls between 05/24/13 and 05/28/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512- 232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
