Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 06/14/13 and Monday, 06/17/13. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A black Magnavox TV was reported stolen after being left unattended and unsecured inside the 1st floor lobby. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 6-14-13. UT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1616 Guadalupe Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered a 5th floor office window had been broken. During the investigation, the officer was not able to tell what caused the window to break. Estimated loss: $400.00. Discovered on: 6-16-13, at 8:38 AM. 700 BLOCK LAVACA Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Assist Outside Agency / Theft: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject rifling through a women’s wallet. The subject was observed removing several items and placing them into his pocket. When stopped the subject threw the wallet onto the sidewalk and told the officers he intended to return the wallet to its rightful owner. During the investigation, the officer soon discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody and during a search officers discovered he was in possession of a “Crack pipe.” Additional charges of Theft and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia were filed and the subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-15-13, at 2:06 AM. 700 BLOCK LAVACA Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject broke a large tree limb. Estimated damage: $150.00. Discovered on: 6-15-13, at 4:36 AM. 1200 BLOCK LAMAR BLVD Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A UT Police Officer observed a motorcycle committing several traffic offenses. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath. The officer noted the driver was swaying back and forth as he stood next to his motorcycle. The driver informed the officer he had consumed too much alcohol and asked if he could take a cab home. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Prior to being transported, the subject was searched incidental to his arrest. The officers discovered the subject was in possession of 5 tablets of Gabapentin IP. When asked about the pills, the subject stated he takes those pills to get high. Occurred on: 6-14-13, at 11:47 PM. 2400 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Theft / Unlawful Carrying a Weapon / Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of CMB. The officers located the bike, which had been placed on the bike carrier of a city bus. The bus driver pointed out the subject who had placed the bike on the carrier. The subject informed the officer he had purchased the bike for $40.00 from a subject in South Austin and was only passing through UT. The subject seemed to be taken back when he was informed the bike belonged to the University of Texas Police Department. The subject was taken into custody for Theft. During a search incidental to his arrest, officers discovered the subject was in possession of three knives with blades longer than 5 ½ inches. In addition, the officers located a pair of bolt cutters inside the subject’s backpack. Additional charges of Unlawful Carrying a Weapon / Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument were filed. Recovered value: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 6-14-13, at 8:55 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 44 Alarm Reports, 2 Suspicious Activity reports, 1 Medical Call, and 5 unsecured doors between 6/14/13 and 6/17/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
