Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 06-21-13 and Monday, 06-24-13. BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART, 1900 Speedway Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT had grabbed the bottom portion of an art piece and began shaking it. This caused the art piece to collapse and fall. The subject informed the officer that it appeared to be an interactive art piece. No charges were filed at the time. Occurred on: 6-21-13, at 7:52 PM. 200 WEST 24th STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject attempting to lift a parking control arm. When stopped the subject informed the officer he was trying to get into his girlfriend’s apartment. The subject went on to state he had been to several downtown establishments were he had consumed several drinks and lost his girlfriend in the process. The officers confirmed the subject had in fact been drinking due to the strong odor of alcohol on his breath and other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-23-13, at 1:19 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 27th STREET Purchase of Alcohol for a Minor / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed silver Hyundai run a red light. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle as well as on the breath of the non-UT driver. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver but did not observe any clues that would indicate he was intoxicated. The officers discovered an open 12-pack of beer inside the vehicle. One of the passengers stated the driver had purchased the beer, they were only helping him drink it. The driver was taken into custody for Purchase of Alcohol for a Minor and Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. The passengers were issued court appearance citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 6-22-13 at 2:37 AM. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A non-UT subject was discovered passed out next to OHH. After several attempts the officer was able to get the subject to respond to verbal stimulation. The subject was confused as to his location, time of day, and displayed a number of signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. During a search of the subject, incidental to his arrest, the officers discovered three green pills in the subject’s pocket. The subject identified the pills as his, “nerve” pills. The “nerve” pills were later identified as, clonazepam. An additional charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance was filed. Occurred on: 6-23-13, at 1:58 AM. 1600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft / Possession of Marijuana: The UT Police Department received information a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the north side of UTA. The officers located the subject as well as the bike several blocks away. The subject stated he had found the bike and it was unlocked. The subject was taken into custody for Theft. During a search of the subject incidental to his arrest, officers discovered he was in possession of a packet of synthetic marijuana. Additional charges were filed. Recovered loss: $1,350.00. Occurred on: 6-22-13, at 2:02 AM. 2400 BLOCK GUADALUPE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer discovered a non-UT subject passed out in the middle of the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject’s breath and noted other signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-23-13, at 4:33 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 70 Alarm Reports, 3 Suspicious Activity reports, 2 Suspicious Person reports, 3 Burned Out Light reports, and 3 unsecured doors between 6/21/13 and 6/24/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
