Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 06/28/13 and Tuesday, 07/02/13. Collections Deposit Library, 1810 Red River Theft: The UT Police Department received information that a non-UT subject had removed a mountain bicycle from the bike racks located on the east side of CDL. The officers were unable to locate the subject but recovered the bike. Recovered loss: $800.00 . Occurred on: 06-28-13, at 2:50 pm. O’ Henry Hall, 601 Colorado St. Public Intoxication: UTPD responded to a report of a subject laying on his back near a bus stop. After making contact, the officer determined that the subject had missed his bus and was stumbling on the sidewalk. The Officer also noted other signs of intoxication. A friend of the subject arrived on scene and assumed responsibility for the intoxicated person. No charges were filed. Occurred on: 06-29-13, at 3:40 am. Art Building, 2301 San Jacinto Blvd. Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered his front vehicle window had been broken. Nothing was missing from the vehicle. No suspect has been located. Estimated damage: $200.00. Occurred on: 6-29-13 between 4:00 PM and 4:25 PM. Gregory Gym, 2101 Speedway Theft: A UT staff member reported a stolen bike tire. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 06-29-13, between 9:50 PM and 10:15 PM. 2400 Trinity Street Graffiti: Words written in black ink were discovered on the Tony Smith “Amaryllis” sculpture. Estimated repair: $200.00. Discovered on: 06-29-13, at 8:17 AM. 1700 Rio Grande Street Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a one way street. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver was also slurring his words and stumbling while getting out of the vehicle. The non-UT driver informed the officer he was on his way home from Downtown. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During a search incidental to his arrest, officers located a plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance. The substance tested positive for Marijuana. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 06-30-13, at 1:42 AM. Student Services Building, 100 West Dean Keeton Street Criminal Tresspass: UT Police responded to a report of a suspicious person drinking beer inside SSB. The suspect was located and identified as a frequent flyer. This individual has received approximately 20 free rides to Central Booking since 2008. The subject was arrested and graciously accepted ride 21 to Central Booking. Occurred on: 07-01-13, at 11:53 PM. Graduate School of Business, 100 East 21st Street Theft: A UT staff member reported a stolen TI-83 calculator. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 07/01/2013, between 11:00 AM-11:20 AM. Walter Webb Hall, 2500 Guadalupe Graffiti: Words written in black ink were discovered on the north portion of the Walter Webb Hall wall. Estimated repair: $300.00. Discovered on: 07-01-13, at 1:25 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 84 Alarm Reports, 6 light problem reports, 1 suspicious activity report, 1 suspicious package, and 2 disturbances between 06/28/13 and 07/02/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512- 232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
