Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 07/11/13 and Friday, 07/12/13. 2100 SAN JACINTO BLVD DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED, MORE THAN ONE VALID DL IN POSSESSION: A UT Police Officer observed a Toyota Sedan attempt a stop at two flashing lights on Guadalupe Street. The attempted stops were accompanied by swerving back and forth over the double yellow lines in the road. The Officer continued to follow the vehicle down Martin Luther King Blvd., to San Jacinto where the vehicle accelerated above the posted speed limit. The Officer initiated a traffic stop and upon speaking to the driver noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath and glassy bloodshot eyes. The subject submitted to Standard Field Sobriety Testing. The subject displayed multiple clues indicating that she was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. During a search incidental to arrest the Officer discovered an additional driver’s license in her possession. The subject was also charged with Possession of More than One Valid Driver’s License. Occurred on: 07/12/2013, at 04:02 AM. 300 WEST 24TH STREET CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL BY A MINOR: A female subject was observed sitting with her arms and head resting on her knees, on the side of 24th Street. A UT Police Officer checked on the subject, and a strong odor of alcohol, glassy eyes, and slurred speech was quickly identified. The subject stated that she was 21 years of age but was unable to produce identification to verify this claim. After the Police Officer explained the consequences for failing to identify herself, she admitted to being under the age of 21. The subject was given a citation for Consumption of Alcohol By a Minor and released. Occurred on: 07/12/2013, at 02:30AM. 1500 TRINITY STREET CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL BY A MINOR: A male subject was observed banging on a car door in the middle Trinity Street. The subject was irate with the driver of the vehicle and yelled obscenities followed by a one finger salute to the driver as they drove away. The Police Officer spoke to the subject and was told his friends just left him after a night downtown, in which they had not been drinking. The Police Officer smelled an odor of alcohol coming from the subject’s breath. The subject responded that he had been around alcohol and the smell must have gotten in his clothes. A driver’s license in the subject’s wallet showed that he was under the legal drinking age of 21. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol By a Minor and released. Occurred on: 07/12/2013, at 02:18AM. 2600 GUADALUPE STREET PUBLIC INTOXICATION: A UT Police Officer observed a male subject passed out on bench located at the corner of 26th Street and Guadalupe. The Officer woke the subject, who he was very confused and unaware of his surroundings. A strong odor of alcohol was coming from the subject and he had glassy, bloodshot eyes. The subject had trouble balancing and stated that he had been lying on the bench for a couple of weeks, “4 Loco” can be a very powerful drink. The Officer placed the subject under arrest for Public Intoxication. Occurred on: 07/11/2013, at 10:05PM. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
