Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 07/26/13 and Monday, 07/29/13. ****ADMINISTRATIVE ALERT I’ve Got Your Back - Sexual Assault Risk Reduction for UT Students Tuesday, July 30th, 2013 3:30-5pm Student Activities Center, 3.112 Balcony Room B Please join staff from Voices Against Violence, UTPD Crime Prevention and Student Emergency Services to discuss sexual assault risk reduction for yourself and your friends. This session will cover strategies to increase self-protection and how to intervene safely should you notice something that bothers you. We will cover issues of self-defense, creating a safety plan with friends, tactics for intervention and resources available on campus for all students. We encourage students of all genders to attend. https://www.facebook.com/events/594848853871871/ RAD CLASS IS AVAILABLE AUGUST 12TH-14TH, SIGN UP NOW: http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ JESTER DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21st STREET Theft: A male UT Student reported his Viejo laptop stolen from Jester Academic by an unknown subject. The laptop was left unattended for approximately five minutes while the student went to the restroom. Loss Value: $650.00 Occurred on: 07/28/13, at 3:49 PM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 SAN ANTONIO STREET Public Intoxication: A male UT Student was observed rolling on the ground and reaching his arms in the air, by the east entrance to the San Antonio garage. The student stated that he had been drinking at a bar and was currently making a failed attempt to stand. The student displayed multiple signs of intoxication. The student was released to a sober friend on-scene. Occurred on: 07/28/13, at 3:27 AM. EAST MALL, 201 EAST 22ND STREET Public Intoxication: A shoeless Non-UT male subject was observed staggering down 23rd street to the east mall where he finally came to rest on a bench. The subject sat and slowly slumped forward to begin the process of passing out. The subject stated that he had been out at a bar with friends earlier but somehow had lost all of his friends. A UT Police Officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the subject and observed other clues of intoxication. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 07/28/13, at 4:30 AM. 200 WEST 6TH STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A Grey BMW was observed driving eastbound in the 200 block of west 6th street, which is the westbound one way portion of the street. A UT Police Officer stopped the vehicle and immediately smelled a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. The subject had difficulty speaking and displayed slow movements. After consenting to Field Sobriety testing the subject displayed several clues of intoxication. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 07/28/13, at 2:45 AM. COLLECTION DEPOSIT LIBRARY, 1810 RED RIVER STREET Theft, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: UT Police Officers responded to a bicycle theft in progress at the Collections Deposit Library bicycle racks. A cable lock that was securing the black and yellow Schwinn was cut and the bicycle was taken by a Non-UT male subject. UT Police Officers stopped the subject on the bicycle, in the 200 block of South Congress. The subject was possession of a pair of bolt cutters, which is a common tool used by bicycle thieves to cut cable locks. The subject was arrested for Theft and Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. Recovered Value: $1130.00 Occurred on: 07/27/13, at 3:35 AM. 601 COLORADO STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of an unconscious but breathing male subject lying on the ground by the O’Henry building parking lot. The Non-UT subject was lying on his stomach in a puddle of water, mixed with the previous contents of his stomach. After several attempts to pass off credit cards as identification, the subject was identified by his school ID. (Hint: Big 12 School located in Lubbock) The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 0727/13, at 2:18 AM. LOT 37, 2200 RED RIVER STREET Duty Upon Striking Unattended Vehicle: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of a leaving the scene collision. A blue Mini Cooper was seen striking the left back quarter panel of a white Chevrolet Malibu. Damage Value: $500.00 Occurred on: 07/26/13, between 9:30 AM – 1:20 PM. FACILITIES COMPLEX BUILDING 2, 1720 MANOR ROAD Theft, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: UT Police Officers responded to a bicycle theft in progress at Facilities Complex Building 2, southeast bicycle racks. The black Trek Mountain bicycle was secured to the racks with a cable lock and the cable lock was cut to remove the bicycle. A male Non-UT subject was stopped at 2nd and Navasota by UT Police Officers with the bicycle in his possession. The subject also had a pair of bolt plier cutters in his possession which is a common tool used to cut cable locks. The subject was arrested for Theft and the Unlawful Use of a Criminal Instrument. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. Recovered Value: $1130.00 Occurred on: 07/26/13, at 10:35 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 59 Alarm Reports, 2 Lighting Problem Reports, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Suspicious Package Report, 1 False 911 Report Unsecured Door Reports, 1 Sick/Ill Person Report, 1 Injured Person Report, 1 Abandoned Vehicle Report between 07/26/13 and 07/29/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
