Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 08/07/13 and Thursday, 08/08/13. RAD CLASS IS AVAILABLE AUGUST 12TH-14TH, SIGN UP NOW: http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 GUADALUPE STREET Graffiti: A UT Police Officer located words written in silver spray paint on the east wall of Walter Webb Hall. The graffiti covered an area approximately 6 feet by 8 feet and a second area that was approximately 2 feet by 3 feet. Estimated Repair: $250.00 Occurred on: 08/08/13, at 3:20 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Graffiti on campus property is a Felony. A serious charge such as this carries serious fines, expensive lawyer fees and may cost you future employment opportunities. BRAZOS GARAGE, 200 EAST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member reported that her passenger door and window had been “keyed” by an unknown subject. Estimated Damage: $400.00 Occurred on: 08/07/13, at 9:46 PM. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 RED RIVER STREET Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer observed a male and female subject walking along the east side of Waller Creek. The UT Police Officer recognized the Non-UT male subject as a “frequent flyer” on campus. The male subject has been known to enjoy evening naps in buildings as an unauthorized visitor and permanently borrowing bicycles. The subject was arrested for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/07/13, at 7:44 PM. MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD AND GUADALUPE STREET Graffiti: A UT Police Officer located a 3 foot by 3 foot design in black spray paint on a retaining wall at the corner of MLK and Guadalupe. Estimated Repair: $75.00 Occurred on: 08/07/13, at 2:50 PM. JESTER DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Criminal Trespass, Possession of Marijuana, and Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer was dispatched to a suspicious package call on the exterior of Jester West, by the hand railing. An unattended black backpack was located and a birth certificate was found inside. The birth certificate returned to a Non-UT male subject that has been previously arrested for Criminal Trespass twice on campus. UT Police Officers viewed a picture of the subject and waited in the area for his return. A subject exiting Jester West was identified as the subject in the picture and the owner of the backpack. The subject was removing a trash bin and stated he was working on campus. The subject was arrested on two active warrants for Possession of Marijuana and Criminal Trespass. The subject forgot to throw away one final piece of trash, while during a search incidental to arrest, a baggie containing Marijuana was found in his pocket. The subject was also charged with Possession of Marijuana and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/07/13, at 11:17 AM. GUADALUPE AND 21ST STREET Possession of Marijuana, Disregard Official Traffic Control Device, and Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2400 block of Guadalupe Street, for a disregarded red light. Once in contact with the Non-UT male subject, the UT Police Officer noticed a strong odor of Marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle, a clear baggie containing Marijuana and a rolled cigarette “joint” containing Marijuana were found in the console area. The subject was arrested for Possession of Marijuana. The subject had two active warrants for Failure to Appear in Court and Speeding. He was transported to Central Booking where he was released to Travis County Sheriff’s Office personnel. Occurred on: 08/07/13, at 7:20 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 Alarm Reports, 1 Lighting Problem Report, 1 Water Leak Report, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 Suspicious Package Report, and 1 Welfare Concern Report between 08/07/13 and 08/08/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
