Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 08/13/13 and Thursday, 08/15/13. HOMER RAINY HALL, 200 WEST 21ST STREET Criminal Trespass: UT Police Officers responded to Homer Rainy Hall on a report of a stolen phone and the male Non-UT subject was still in the area. The subject stated he “took the phone to make a call and was going to return it when he finished.” UT Police Officers recognized him as a “frequent flyer” with a recent Criminal Trespass Warning issued by UTPD. The subject was arrested for Criminal Trespass and transported to Central Booking, where he was able to complete his call. Occurred on: 08/14/13, at 2:20 PM. UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1616 GUADALUPE STREET Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer responded to the northeast exterior of UTA for a report of markings made on the sidewalk in chalk. Estimated Repair Cost: $50.00 Occurred on: 08/14/13, at 7:45 PM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 RED RIVER STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A Non-UT male subject was observed sleeping on the west exterior of the Texas Swim Center. Once awake, the subject could not recall what date it was and he had a strong odor of alcohol. The subject stated that he did not have any form of identification and proceeded to open his wallet to support this claim. During a consent search of his wallet, the UT Police Officer discovered several forms of identification including a mini high school diploma. A warrant check revealed that the subject “failed” to disclose that he was under the age of twenty-one, the legal drinking age in the State of Texas. The subject was cited for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released on scene. Occurred on: 08/14/13, at 7:36 PM. JOHN HARGIS HALL, 1811 RED RIVER STREET Public intoxication: A male Non-UT subject was observed passed out next to a bicycle on the west exterior of John Hargis Hall. Once awake, the subject had a strong odor of alcohol and displayed several additional signs of intoxication. Every time the UT Police Officer requested the subject’s driver’s license, he would attempt to provide his passport. The UT Police Officer arrested the subject for Public Intoxication and provided him a trip to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/14/13, at 4:17 AM. TWENTY-SEVENTH STREET GARAGE, 109 WEST 27TH STREET Graffiti: A UT Police Officer found several spots on the top level of the Twenty-Seventh Street Garage with images and writing in purple spray paint. Estimated Repair Value: $200.00 Occurred on: 08/14/13, at 3:47 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Graffiti on campus property is a Felony. A serious charge such as this carries serious fines, expensive lawyer fees and may cost you future employment opportunities. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 31 Alarm Reports, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Suspicious Person Report, 1 Lighting Problem Report, 1 Accidental Damage Report, 1 False 911 Report, 1 Chemical Spill Report, and 5 Unsecured Door Reports between 08/13/13 and 08/15/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
