Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 08/30/13 and Tuesday, 09/03/13. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE Report bias incidents that you experience or witness to CCRT (Campus Climate Response Team) online at http://www.utexas.edu/diversity/ccrt DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2207 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Fraud, Credit Card or Debit Card Abuse: A Non-UT female subject reported her credit card missing and later used without her consent, for unauthorized purchases. Estimated Loss: $ 17.67 Occurred on: 09/03/13, at 9:33 AM. CRIME TIP- CONTACT YOUR BANK TO IMMEDIATELY CANCEL ANY MISSING CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD IN ORDER TO PREVENT UNAUTHORIZED USAGE. ALMETRIUS DUREN HALL, 2624 WHITIS AVENUE Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: UT Police Officers responded to Almetrius Duren Hall for a smell of marijuana. The UT Police Officers located the room were the odor was at its strongest, knocked on the door and announced their presence. A UT Student answered the door and admitted to recently smoking marijuana in his room. The UT Student stated that he currently had, “no marijuana in his room.” A consent search revealed a marijuana “grinder” in his possession that contained residue of a green leafy substance and it had an odor of marijuana. The subject was issued a citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and released on scene. Occurred on: 09/01/13, at 11:05 PM. BRACKENRIDGE HALL DORMITORY, 207 EAST 21ST STREET Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer responded to Brackenridge Hall Dormitory for a report of a subject that left his property spread out on the floor of a restroom. A bag containing most of the property had an ID in it that belonged to a known trespasser and thief on campus. Following the direction of alert students and staff members in the area, the UT Police Officer located the subject in a nearby courtyard. The Non-UT subject stated he went into the building to, “retrieve money from a friend.” True he may have been there to “retrieve money” but it probably was not from a “friend.” The subject was unable to provide a last name or any contact information for his alleged friend. The subject was arrested for Criminal Trespass and the “friendly” UT Police Officer transported him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 09/01/13, at 10:26 AM. DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2207 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Theft: A UT Student reported his iPhone missing after he celebrated a touchdown at the UT Football game. An unidentified witness stated, “a subject picked up the cellphone and continued walking up the steps.” Estimated Loss Value: $250.00 Occurred on: 09/01/13, at 9:08 AM. UA9, 2609 UNIVERSITY DRIVE Evading Arrest or Detention, 2 Charges of Possession of a Dangerous Drug, 6 Charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Theft, Burglary and a partridge in a pear tree….: A Non-UT male subject was seen by alert UT Police Officers leaving the area of an activated building alarm. The subject began to run when UT Police Officers approached him and he disregarded several requests to stop. The subject eluded UT Police Officers long enough to get into his vehicle and drive away, again disregarding request to stop. Quick thinking UT Police Officers were able to get a license plate number of the vehicle and broadcast the information over the radio. A UT Police Officer located the vehicle driving on Clyde Littlefield road and conducted a traffic stop. In plain view, an additional UT Police Officer observed several needles and pill bottles on the floor board of the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed the subject was in possession of a plethora of illegal drugs and prescriptive drugs not issued to him, as well as metals belonging to the University of Texas. The subject was arrested on a plethora of charges (eleven in total) and he was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 09/01/13, at 1:07 AM. DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2207 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Public Intoxication: Event staff personnel observed a male subject display several signs of intoxication while attempting to enter the UT Football game. A UT Police Officer arrived on scene and attempted to identify the subject. The UT Student did not have a driver’s license and became agitated to the point that assistance was needed to control him. The subject provided multiple years for his date of birth and stated that the correct year was, “whatever year made him 94.” The subject was not found to be 94 years old, but he did have difficulty balancing, probably from the “two shots” of alcohol that he stated he consumed. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and he was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 8:33 AM. DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2207 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Public Intoxication: A UT Student enjoyed the UT Football game so much that he attempted to walk onto the field. Law Enforcement personnel observed the subject swaying and stumbling before falling down the stairs leading to the field. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 9:07 PM. DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2207 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Student, under the legal drinking age of twenty-one, was found in possession of an empty silver flask at the UT Football game. The subject informed UT Police Officers that he had consumed the alcohol that was in the flask. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was ejected from the game. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 8:47 PM. DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2207 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Public Intoxication: A UT Student was seen attempting to use his Chase bank card as a ticket in order to enter the UT Football game. The subject continued to “Chase what matters” and eventually located his ticket to gain admittance into the game. The subject displayed several signs of intoxication including a bloody nose. The subject was provided the opportunity to phone a friend but he was unable to successfully use his phone. After being out smarted by his smart phone, the subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 7:20 PM. BELMONT HALL, 2109 SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A Non-UT subject was observed attempting to enter in the UT Football game without a ticket. The subject displayed several signs of intoxication including difficulty balancing. The subject was unable to properly navigate his cell phone in order to phone a sober friend. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 6:29 PM. 1200 LAVACA STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer was flagged down by a Non-UT subject standing by a vehicle with damage and two flat tires. The subject stated that he “hit a curb with his vehicle.” The vehicle damage did not appear consistent with the subject’s story. While speaking with the subject, the UT Police Officer noticed several clues that the subject was intoxicated. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/31/13 at, 5:00 AM. 201 EAST 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student sitting on a curb with her head in her hands and her dinner at her feet. The UT Police Officer stopped to check on the subject. The subject stated that she was sick because she consumed alcohol and was unaware how much. The subject was found by under the legal drinking age of twenty-one. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released to a sober friend. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 2:21 AM. 2500 GUADALUPE STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling north in the 2100 block of Guadalupe at night time without headlights or tail lights. The UT Police Officer initiated a traffic stop at 24th Street and the vehicle stopped in the intersection with the front passenger wheel on the curb. When asked for his driver’s license, the Non-UT subject checked all four pockets on his pants but was unable to locate his license. The subject smelled of alcohol and was unable to properly spell his last name. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 08/31/13, at 1:35 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 99 Alarm Reports, 1 False 911 Report, 3 Welfare Concern Reports, 7 Suspicious Activities Reports, 1 Public Assist Report, 2 Accidental Damage Reports, 1 Public Assist Report, 2 Assist Outside Agency Reports, 1 Elevator Assist Report, 1 Key Assist Report, 1 Lighting Report, 1 Unsecured Door Report, and 1 Lost and Found Report between 08/30/13 and 09/03/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
