Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09/06/13 and Monday, 09/09/13. *SCAM ALERT* Recently several University employees were victims of a “phishing scam” in which they thought the email message received was from a University Department on campus. When at all possible, always verify the authenticity of email messages by the sender information and DO NOT open included links if you have any doubt. If there is uncertainty whether or not the information is legitimate, call the appropriate department within the University to verify or contact the ITS department. In a joint Law Enforcement effort to keep the Austin and University Communities safe, the Austin Police Department would like to remind you of a few safety tips regarding car Burglary. The area surrounding East Riverside and Crossing Place has seen an increase in burglaries over the past few weeks. Please remember to hide your things, lock your doors, and take your keys. Don't be a victim. The Austin Police Department reminds you to please report any suspicious activity to 911. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE Report bias incidents that you experience or witness to CCRT (Campus Climate Response Team) online at http://www.utexas.edu/diversity/ccrt INTRAMURAL ATHLETIC FIELDS, 4901 GUADALUPE STREET Burglary of Vehicle (Two Counts): Two UT Students reported their vehicles broken in to at the Intramural Athletics Fields between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM. The vehicles were parked next to each other. Each had a window broken out and their console areas had been rummaged through. One vehicle had a GPS Unit and Apple iPhone charging cable taken; nothing was reported missing from the other vehicle. Estimated Loss Value: $95.00 Estimated Damage Value: $500.00 Occurred on: 09/08/13, at 6:00 PM. WHITIS AVENUE AND 21ST STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Student was observed passed out on a window ledge, at Dobie Mall Dormitory, with another UT Student standing alongside. A UT Police Officer arrived and requested that the subject stand up, with negative results. With consent, the UT Police Officer searched her purse for identification. The UT Police Officer smelled a moderate odor of alcohol and a strong odor of vomit coming from both subjects. The subject that was unable to stand had visible vomit in her hair and stated that she consumed, “a couple of shots and some Mad Dog 2020.” While awaiting the arrival of EMS, the Angry Canine drink caused another adverse reaction with the UT Student’s stomach and she was released to EMS “fur” further evaluation. The other UT Student was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released from the scene, as she was found to be under the legal drinking age of twenty-one. Occurred on: 09/08/13, at 1:58 AM. GOLDSMITH HALL COURTYARD, 310 INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer observed three subjects, one UT Student and two Non-UT students, sitting by a fountain in the Goldsmith Courtyard. Upon approach, the UT Police Officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana and the UT Student quickly stood up moving to the opposite side of the fountain. An involvement check showed that the UT Student has had several prior reports involving marijuana at his on-campus dormitory. All three subjects had glassy, bloodshot eyes and dilated pupils. The UT Police Officer observed one Non-UT subject drop an unidentified object at his feet. The object was later identified as a cigarette with the filter removed and had a strong odor of burnt marijuana. All three subjects were issued citations for Possessions of Marijuana and released from the scene. Occurred on: 09/07/13, at 4:20 AM (How Ironic?). EAST MARTIN LUTHER KING JR BLVD AND COMAL STREET DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED: UT Police Officers observed a silver sedan swerving and overcorrecting through several lanes of traffic in the 300 block of MLK Blvd. The UT Police Officers initiated a traffic stop at 1100 east MLK Blvd and requested the subject exit the vehicle. The UT Staff member stated that she “was leaving work and had not had anything to drink.” Later the UT Staff member stated she had consumed “one margarita at the Dive Bar after work.” After consenting to perform some standard sobriety tests, the subject changed her mind and stated she “did not want to because she was too drunk.” The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 09/07/13, at 2:00 AM. WOOLRICH LABORATORIES, 210 EAST 24TH STREET Theft: A UT Student reported her unattended white iPhone and green case missing from a classroom at Woolrich Laboratories. Estimated Loss Value: $300.00 Occurred on: 09/06/13, at 10:14 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 57 Alarm Reports, 5 Suspicious Activities Reports, 3 Lighting Problem Reports, 1 Assist Outside Agency Report, 1 Welfare Concern Report, 1 Smell of Smoke Report, 1 Peace Officer’s Emergency Detention Report, 3 Key Assist Reports, and 5 Unsecured Door Reports between 09/06/13 and 09/09/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
