Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 09/17/13 and Thursday, 09/19/13. Join forces with The University of Texas community, and celebrate National Night Out with us! This year's University Apartment’s National Night Out event is planned for SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2013, at Jasper Park, located at Brackenridge Apartments, 3350 Lake Austin BLVD., from 5-8pm. The on campus National Night Out event is planned for TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2013 – Gregory Gym Plaza – from 12-4pm. National Night Out has been held annually since 1983, and in the last sixteen years Texas has been nationally recognized as a leading state for community participation. In fact, the University of Texas Police Department has received numerous awards from The Central Texas Crime Prevention Association for participating in National Night Out. There will be free food, games, prizes, and t-shirts!!! ***It is time for the 11th Session of UTPD’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 7, 2013, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 18, 2013. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. Please see the attached documents for more information. BURDINE HALL, 2505 UNIVERSITY AVENUE Criminal Mischief: A UT Staff Member reported the south side exterior door of Burdine Hall as damaged with the glass shattered in a “spider web” like pattern. Estimated Repair Value: $300.00 Occurred on: 09/19/13, at 12:12 AM. JACKSON GEOLOGICAL SCIENCE BUILDING, 2305 SPEEDWAY Theft: A UT Staff Member reported her black pack back and contents stolen from an unsecured room in the Jackson Geological Science Building. Estimated Loss Value: $40.00 Occurred on: 09/18/13, at 10:13 PM. BURDINE HALL, 2505 UNIVERSITY AVENUE Assault: A UT Student reported having an unknown “sludge” substance thrown on her by a passing vehicle. The substance did not sting or burn her skin, nor did it cause dizziness or nausea. Occurred on: 09/18/13, at 9:51 PM. 1800 LAVACA STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a beige four door Mercury traveling southbound on Lavaca Street. Since Lavaca Street is a one way northbound street the UT Police Officer carefully followed the vehicle to conduct a traffic stop. Once stopped, the UT Police Officer saw two occupants inside and a strong odor of alcohol was coming from the vehicle. The female driver had her head down during the stop and played the Whisper Game as she relayed information through the passenger to the UT Police Officer. After consenting to some field sobriety test, it was determined that the female driver was intoxicated to a point in which she could not safely operate a vehicle. The UT Police Officer, in a non-whispering voice, told the subject she was under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated and she was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 09/18/13, at 2:01 AM. 214 EAST 21ST STREET Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer responded to the Moore-Hill Dormitory courtyard on a report of several UT Students smoking marijuana. Upon arrival the UT Police Officer smelled what they believed, through their training, to be the odor of burnt marijuana. All of the subjects displayed glassy red eyes and the entire group denied smoking anything in the courtyard. Their denial went “Up in Smoke” when a small glass pipe was located by one of the subject’s feet and a baggie containing a green leafy substance was found on another subjects person. The subject with the baggie was issued a citation for Possession of Marijuana and all subjects were reported to the Dean of Students Office. All were released from the scene. Occurred on: 09/17/13, at 11:35 PM. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 EAST DEAN KEETON STREET Theft: A UT Student reported her unattended black iPhone 5 and pink Otter Box case stolen from the Engineering Teaching Center 2nd floor women’s restroom. Estimated Loss Value: $380.00 Occurred on: 09/17/13, at 5:12 PM. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 TRINITY STREET Burglary of a Building: A UT Student reported his Clarinet stolen from a secured locker in the Music Recital Hall Building. Estimated Loss Value: $500.00 Occurred on: 09/17/13, at 2:09 PM. PICKLE RESEARCH CENTER BUILDING 45, 10100 BURNET ROAD Theft: A UT Staff Member reported two large BBQ grills stolen from the north side exterior of Pickle Research Center Building 45. Estimated Loss Value: $810.00 Occurred on: 09/17/13, at 10:47 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 40 Alarm Reports, 1 Lighting Problem Report, 3 Unsecured Door Reports, 1 Peace Officer’s Emergency Detention Report, 2 Key Assist Reports, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 Lost and Found Report, 1 Welfare Concern Report and 2 Accidental Damage Reports between 09/17/13 and 09/19/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
