Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 09/27/13 and Monday, 09/30/13. JOIN US TOMORROW!!! The on campus National Night Out event is planned for TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2013 – Gregory Gym Plaza – from 12-4pm. National Night Out has been held annually since 1983, and in the last sixteen years Texas has been nationally recognized as a leading state for community participation. In fact, the University of Texas Police Department has received numerous awards from The Central Texas Crime Prevention Association for participating in National Night Out. There will be free food, games, and t-shirts!!! WEDNESDAY OCT 2nd COP DAY 11:00am - 1:00pm Speedway Mall Have you met the new UT Police Chief? Dinner with the Chief Wednesday, Oct 2 5:00pm to 7:00pm Recreational Sports Center Room 2.104 Meet UT Police Chief Carter and APD chief Art Acevedo and chat with them about safety, security and other campus issues while enjoying some Pizza and Root Beer! THURSDAY OCT 3rd SHATTERED DREAMS Thursday, Oct 3rd 10:00am-3:00pm Location: 2200 Speedway Shattered Dreams will be illustrating how fast a DWI collision can occur and how devastating it is. Join the Whitis Area Residence Halls for a “carnival style” National Night Out Block Party which will be held on Tuesday October 1st from 5-7pm in The Quad Courtyard! There will be bounce houses, carnival games, prizes, and food, you don’t want to miss this! For more information contact your Resident Assistant. ***It is time for the 11th Session of UTPD’s Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy begins on Monday, October 7, 2013, and continues every Monday night from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. for seven weeks concluding on November 18, 2013. Attendance at six of the seven nights is required for graduation. Applicants are subject to criminal background check. Please see the attached documents for more information. RAD class scheduled from 5-9pm on Tuesdays October 15, October 22 and October 29th PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported her unattended Samsung Galaxy S43 as stolen from the second floor of the Perry Castaneda Library. Estimated Loss Value: $200.00 Occurred on: 09/29/13, at 10:34 PM. 200 EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer was flagged down for a report of a passed out UT Student on the ground, in the 200 block of 21st Street. As the UT Student regained consciousness he vomited and stated he “drank the punch.” A good rule of thumb is to NOT drink the punch if it is mixed in a trash can. EMS responded to the scene and the subject was transported for further evaluation. Occurred on: 09/29/13, at 2:34 AM. MAIN MALL Theft: A UT Student reported her unattended backpack containing keys, SD card, and laptop as stolen from the Main Mall area. Estimated Loss Value: $885.00 Occurred on: 09/28/13, at 4:00 PM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 WHITIS AVENUE Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: During a fire safety check by dorm staff, several bottles of alcohol were found in a room where the occupants of the room were under the legal drinking age of 21. Occurred on: 09/28/13, at 3:30 PM. FACILITIES COMPLEX 7, 1300 MANOR ROAD Driving While Intoxicated: An alert UT Police Officer observed a parked vehicle at the State Owned gas pumps. The vehicle was running and when the UT Police Officer approached the vehicle, the Non-UT driver attempted to drive away. Once stopped, the subject was asked to exit the vehicle and the UT Police Officer smelled a faint odor of alcohol. The subject provided several incoherent stories of where she was coming from and where she was headed. After consenting to field sobriety testing, it was clear where the subject was headed, as the UT Police Officer determined she was intoxicated to a point in which it was not safe for her to operate a motor vehicle. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and she was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 09/28/13, at 3:23 AM. 2300 RED RIVER STREET Assist Outside Agency, Possession of Marijuana: A Non-UT subject was seen slumped over and unconscious in the 2300 block of Red River Street. A UT Police Officer had to announce their presence several times in order to get the subject to respond. The subject woke and a warrant check revealed that the she had several warrants with the Austin Police Department. The subject was arrested for Outstanding Warrants and during a search incident to arrest, a burnt cigarette with a green leafy substance inside was found on her person. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. CLARK FIELD, 300 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported his backpack containing several items including his wallet, various cards, $20 cash, keys, Samsung Galaxy S3 phone, TI-84 graphing calculator and 2 bike lights as stolen from Clark Field. Estimated Loss Value: $350.00 Occurred on: 09/27/13, at 8:25 PM. SAN JACINTO GARAGE, 2401 SAN JACINTO STREET Graffiti: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of graffiti located on the top level of the San Jacinto Garage. The UT Police Officer observed several marking in yellow spray paint that included pictures and words. Estimated Removal Cost: $150.00 Occurred on: 09/27/13, at 6:55 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 72 Alarm Reports, 4 Key Assist Reports, 7 Suspicious Activities Reports, 4 Lost/Found Reports, 1 Welfare Concern Report, 1 Bicycle Accident Report, 1 Information Report and 1 Assist Outside Agency Report between 09/27/13 and 09/30/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
