Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Monday, 09/30/13 and Friday, 10/04/13. SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS WITHIN OUR DEPARTMENT AND OUR COMMUNITY THAT ASSISTED IN MAKING SAFETY WEEK AND NATIONAL NIGHT OUT A HUGE SUCCESS!! RAD class scheduled from 5-9pm on Tuesdays October 15, October 22 and October 29th LOT 103, 2300 COMAL STREET Burglary of Vehicle: An alert UT Guard noticed broken glass inside and outside of parked truck located in Lot 103. A UT Police Officer arrived on scene and observed a pry mark on the bottom left hand corner of the window frame. The dashboard was damaged and the stereo was missing from the vehicle. A UT Student was contacted and arrived on scene to verify that his vehicle had been broken into without his effective consent. Estimated Loss and Damage Value: $900.00 Occurred on: 10/04/13, at 3:06 AM. 700 COLORADO STREET Public Intoxication: An alert UT Guard saw a UT Student stumbling in the street where he was almost struck by a bus located at the 700 block of Colorado. A UT Police Officer arrived on scene and observed the subject leaning against a wall. The UT Police Officer approached the subject and smelled a moderate odor of alcohol coming from him. When asked how much he had to drink the subject stated he had “enough.” After a few more questions the UT Police Officer had “enough” evidence to determine the subject was intoxicated to which he was a danger to himself and/or others. The subject was arrested for Public intoxication and he was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10/04/13, at 1:40 AM. JESTER WEST, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Criminal Mischief: A UT Student reported damage to an “EXIT” sign located on the 4th floor of Jester West. Estimated Damage Value: $100.00 Occurred on: 10/03/13, at 4:42 PM. LOT 37, 2200 RED RIVER STREET Duty Upon Striking an Unattended Vehicle: A UT Student reported damage to right front quarter panel of his unattended white BMW located in Lot 37. Estimated Damaged Value: $1000.00 Occurred on: 10/03/13, at 12:01 PM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 EAST 21ST STREET Graffiti: A UT Guard reported multiple markings on several stalls in the men’s restroom located on the 3rd and 5th floor of the Perry Castaneda Library. Estimated Removal Cost: $225.00 Occurred on: 10/03/13, at 2:14 AM. JESTER ACADEMIC, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Staff member reported a black Lenovo laptop as stolen from an office in Jester Academic. Estimated Loss Value: $813.00 Occurred on: 10/02/13, at 10:10 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1800 RED RIVER STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a female subject stumble into the road way in the 1800 block of Red River Street. A strong odor of alcohol was coming from the subject, who had approximately 20 more blocks to walk to reach her residence. Due to her level of intoxication and her inability to contact a sober friend the UT Police Officer determined that she was a danger to herself and/or others. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and she was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10/02/13, at 1:30 AM. BERNARD RAPPOPORT BUILDING, 2225 SPEEDWAY Theft: A UT Staff member reported her dark blue Google Nexus Tablet as stolen from her unsecured office. Estimated Loss Value: $400.00 Occurred on: 10/01/13, at 6:20 PM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported his white Apple iPhone and case as stolen from the 6th floor of the Perry Castaneda Library. Estimated Loss Value: $300.00 Occurred on: 10/01/13, at 4:24 PM. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 WEST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported her Apple iPhone 5S and case as stolen from the 3rd floor of the University Teaching Center. Estimated loss Value: $400.00 Occurred on: 10/01/13, at 4:10 PM. DEVELOPMENT BUILDING, 2901 NORTH IH-35 Graffiti: A UT Police Officer saw writing in red spray paint on the north side of the Development Building. Estimated Removal Cost: $150.00 Occurred on: 10/01/13, at 7:45 AM. FRANK DENIUS FIELD, 1000 EAST DEAN KEETON AND 2300 IH-35 ACCESS ROAD Graffiti: A UT Police Officer saw writing in blue aerosol paint on the east and northeast wall of Frank Denius Field. Estimated Removal Cost: $150.00 Occurred on: 10/01/13, at 2:18 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 104 Alarm Reports, 12 Unsecured Door Reports, 2 Assist in Cutting Locks Reports, 1 Assist Outside Agency Report, 2 Key Assist Reports, 5 Suspicious Activities Report, 2 Lighting Concern Reports, 4 Lost/Found Reports, 3 Welfare Concern Reports, 1 Peace officer’s Emergency Detention Reports, 2 Criminal Trespass Warning Reports, 1 Accidental Damage Report, 2 False 911 Reports, and 1 Sick/Ill Person Report between 09/30/13 and 10/04/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
