Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 10/04/13 and Wednesday, 10/09/13. SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS WITHIN OUR DEPARTMENT AND OUR COMMUNITY THAT ASSISTED IN MAKING SAFETY WEEK AND NATIONAL NIGHT OUT A HUGE SUCCESS!! RAD class scheduled from 5-9pm on Tuesdays October 15, October 22 and October 29th CHEMICAL AND PETROLEUM ENGINEERING Theft: A Non-UT subject reported his unsecured Bianchi Grizzly Mountain Bike as stolen from the North West side of the Chemical and Petroleum Building. Estimated Loss Value: $1200.00 Occurred on: 10/08/13, 1:02 PM. CLARK FIELD, 300 EAST 21ST STREET Possession of Marijuana: While on bike patrol at Clark Field, a UT Police Officer smelled the odor of burnt marijuana and observed a UT Student smoking. When asked what he was smoking the subject stated, “a sweet with marijuana.” The subject thought it was not “sweet” when the UT Police Officer seized the small cigar containing marijuana. The subject was issued a citation for Possession of Marijuana and was released on scene. Occurred on: 10/08/13, at 2:33 AM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported his unattended black Apple iPhone 4s and case stolen from the 2nd floor of the Perry Castaneda library. Estimated Loss Value: $200.00 Occurred on: 10/07/13, at 1:40 PM. SAN JACINTO GARAGE, 2401 SAN JACINTO BLVD Leaving The Scene Collision: A Non-UT subject saw a red Ford truck strike a legally parked and unattended Chevrolet truck on the 3rd level of the San Jacinto Garage. The Ford driver left the scene without leaving the necessary information during a collision. Estimated Damage Value: $1000.00 Occurred on: 10/06/13, at 9:55 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Criminal Mischief: A UT Student reported damage to two electric EXIT signs located on the 4th floor of the Jester West dormitory. Estimated Repair Cost: $100.00 Occurred on: 10/06/13, at 5:42 PM. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 RED RIVER STREET Theft: A Non-UT subject reported her unattended black Samsung Exhibit phone and pink case as stolen from the Texas Swim Center. Estimated Loss Value: $80.00 Occurred on: 10/05/13, at 3:00 PM. 400 EAST 23RD STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a silver Nissan Altima run a stop sign at San Jacinto and 24th Street. A strong odor of alcohol was coming from the vehicle and when told why he was being stopped, the driver displayed the face of confusion. The subject was coming from a band rehearsal located at a Pub on 6th street where he had several alcoholic beverages. After consenting to sobriety testing, the UT Police Officer was not confused as the subject displayed several clues of being intoxicated. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Central Booking, just like the UT Police Officer has rehearsed many times. Occurred on: 10/05/13, at 3:00 AM. ALMETRIUS DUREN HALL, 2624 WHITIS AVENUE Possession of Marijuana, Possession or Delivery of Drug Paraphernalia: An alert Resident Assistant contacted UTPD after smelling the odor of burnt marijuana on the 5th floor of Almetrius Duren Hall dormitory. The UT Police Officer located a room where the odor was at its strongest and knocked on the door. A UT Student answered the door and voluntarily provided the UT Police Officer a small baggie containing a green leafy substance and a pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. The UT Police Officer thanked the subject for his honesty and kindly issued him a citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, before releasing him on scene. Occurred on: 10/04/13, at 10:15 PM. SAN JACINTO HALL, 309 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: After a heavy night of drinking, a UT Student reported her purse, iPhone, and wallet containing various cards as missing. Estimated Loss Value: $455.00 Occurred on: 10/04/13, at 11:11 AM. PETER O’DONNELL BUILDING, 201 EAST 24TH STREET Theft: A UT Staff Member reported a 2013 club cart vehicle as stolen from the north east side of the Peter O’Donnell Building. Estimated Loss Value: $15000.00 Occurred on: 10/04/13, at 10:05 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 157 Alarm Reports, 8 Unsecured Door Reports, 1 Assist Outside Agency Report, 3 Lost and Found Reports, 4 Sick/Ill Persons Reports, 5 Lighting Problem Reports, 3 Lost and Found Report, 1 Key Assist Report, 1 Smell of Smoke Report, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Welfare Concern Report and 1 Criminal Trespass Report between 10/04/13 and 10/09/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
