Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Thursday, 10/31/13 and Friday, 11/01/13. SAN JACINTO STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT male subject in a bear costume slumped over his knees at MLK and San Jacinto Street. The subject smelled of alcohol appeared to be “beary” intoxicated. A sober friend was contacted to take responsibility for his furry friend who was found to be under the legal drinking age of 21. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released. Occurred on: 11/1/13, at 4:07 AM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 EAST 21ST STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: An intoxicated UT Student was found passed out on an elevator in the Perry Castaneda Library. UT Police Officers contacted EMS to further evaluate the subject. The subject had a strong odor of alcohol and was found to be under the legal drinking age of 21. After the EMS evaluation the subject was responsive and awake. A sober friend was contacted and responded to the area to take responsibility for the subject. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. 11/01/13, at 4:23 AM. 2600 GUADALUPE STREET Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a silver SUV disregard a stop sign at Whitis Avenue and 21st Street. Once the vehicle was stopped, the UT police Officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver had blood shot eyes and slurred speech. The driver stated that on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being highly intoxicated) that she was “like a 3, not even.” After consenting to field sobriety testing the UT Police Officer determined it was likely that she was intoxicated to a point in which it was unsafe to operate a motor vehicle. The subject was issued a citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. A sober passenger in the vehicle took responsibility for the subject and drove her home. Occurred on: 11/01/13, at 2:44 PM. 500 COLORADO STREET Public Intoxication: A Non-UT subject was seen lying on the ground face down. A UT Police Officer made contact with the subject and woke him. A strong odor of alcohol was coming from the subject and he stated that he just “needed to make it to his car so he could drive home.” Not in support of the idea of drinking and driving, the UT Police Officer suggested he contact a sober friend to pick him up. After a failed attempt at contacting a sober friend, the subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/01/13, at 3:00 AM. 2200 SPEEDWAY STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Student was found passed out on a planter at 2200 Speedway Street. Once awake, the subject had an odor of alcohol and was found to be under the legal drinking age of 21. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released on scene. Occurred on: 11/01/13, at 1:19 AM. COLORADO STREET AND 7TH STREET Public Intoxication: An alert UT Guard observed two female subjects fighting at the intersection of Colorado and 7th Street. Upon arrival, the UT Police Officer met with the aggressor during the fight and observed she had a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech. It was determined that the subject was a danger to herself and others. The subject was arrested for Public intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/1/13, at 1:44 AM. COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING A, 2504 A WHITIS AVENUE Public Intoxication: An alert pedestrian flagged down a UT Police Officer and told them that a subject in the Communications Building stairwell did not appear to be doing very well. The UT Police Officer responded to the area and found a UT Student lying on the stairs vomiting. The subject had difficulty balancing and stated the he had “drank too much alcohol.” A sober friend arrived on scene and took responsibility for the intoxicated subject. Occurred on: 11/01/13, at 12:19 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Criminal Mischief: A UT Staff member reported damage to an electrical EXIT sign located on the 5th floor of Jester West Dormitory. Occurred on: 10/31/13, at 9:52 PM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported his black Dell mouse and black computer charger as stolen from the 6th floor of the Perry Castaneda Library. Estimated Loss Value: $50.00 10/31/13. At 6:47 PM. 2100 WHITIS AVENUE Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer responded to Whitis Avenue for a report of an intoxicated subject. Once on scene, the UT Police Officer made contact with the Non-UT subject who believed he was in Dallas or Plano. The subject had a strong odor of alcohol and glassy watery eyes. The subject was unable to unlock his phone in order to reach a sober friend. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10/31/13, at 4:06 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 Alarm Reports, 3 Suspicious Activities Reports, 1 Key Assist Report, 1 Lost and Found Report, 1 Lighting Problem Report, 1 Smell of Marijuana Report, 1 Accidental Damage Report, 1 Peace Officer’s Emergency Detention Report, 1 Disturbance Report, 1 Information Report, and 1 Criminal Trespass Report between 10/31/13 and 11/01/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. To order a walk, call (512) 232-9255 or email orderasurewalk@gmail.com, and two volunteers, one male and one female, will meet you at your current location and walk you to your destination, whether it be on campus or in the greater campus neighborhoods. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Your cell phone number will not be used for. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Defensive Driving Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
