Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Friday, 11/08/13 and Tuesday, 11/12/13. 1100 EAST DEAN KEETON Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a vehicle disregard a red light, speed, and swerve around another vehicle without signaling, around Dean Keeton and Red River Street. The UT Police Officer activated lights and siren to stop the vehicle, which eventually stopped at an entrance ramp to IH-35, facing the wrong way. The UT Police Officer detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle and the driver had red blood shot eyes. After consenting to several field sobriety tests, it was determined the subject was intoxicated to a point in which it was not safe to operate a motor vehicle. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/12/13, at 1:00 AM. GATES DELL COMPLEX, 2317 SPEEDWAY STREET Theft: A UT Student reported having his MacBook Pro laptop and Garmin Watch as stolen from the 3rd floor of the Gates Dell Complex. Estimated Loss Value: $2625.00 Occurred on: 11/11/13, at 6:51 PM. FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, 2304 WHITIS AVENUE Burglary of Building: A UT Student reported her MacBook Pro as stolen from a room reserved for student, staff, and faculty only, on the second floor of the Flawn Academic Center. Estimated Loss Value: $1500.00 Occurred on: 11/10/13, at 6:50 PM. 4500 PARKWOOD ROAD Possession of Marijuana, Driving Under the Influence by a Minor, Driving Without a License, and Failed to Maintain Financial Responsibility: While traveling through an intersection at Martin Luther King Blvd., a UT Police Officer was almost struck by an oncoming vehicle making an illegal left turn. Once the vehicle was stopped, the UT Police Officer observed unopened bottles of beer in backseat and an opened bottle of beer in the cup holder. The Non-UT subject did not hold a driver’s license, nor did he have proof of insurance. The subject stated that he has never been issued a driver’s license and his momma left the beer in her uninsured vehicle. The subject had glassy blood shot eyes and was very lethargic and relaxed. A brown cigarette that smelled of marijuana, and later tested positive for marijuana, was on the floor board and the subject stated that it belonged to his momma’s boyfriend. The subject may have gotten a lot of things through his life from his momma but the UT Police Officer did not believe drugs and alcohol was one of them. The subject was arrested for Possession of Marijuana, Driving Under the Influence by a Minor, Driving Without a Driver’s License, and Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. Occurred on: 11/10/13, at 1:40 AM. SPEEDWAY GARAGE, 2500 SPEEDWAY STREET Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer observed the north exit gate arm at the Speedway Garage was bent and touching the ground. Estimated Repair Value: $50.00 Occurred on: 11/09/13, at 11:30 PM. INTERMURAL FIELDS, 4901 GUADALUPE STREET Burglary of Vehicle: Non-UT subject reported the rear rectangular window on her Toyota Rav4 as broken out and several items removed without her effective consent. The stolen items include a Coach handbag, brown leather wallet, sunglasses, $100 cash, and various cards. Estimated Loss and Damage Value: $726.00 Occurred on: 11/09/13, at 1:20 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Possession of Marijuana: An alert Resident Assistant at the Jester West Dormitory reported a smell of marijuana on the 4th floor. Once at the door, the UT Police Officer knocked on the door and a UT Student answered. While performing a consent search of the room, The UT Police Officer found a baggie containing a green leafy substance and a pipe that is commonly used to smoke marijuana. The subject was issued a citation for Possession of Marijuana, the Dean of Student’s Office was notified of the incident and the subject was released on scene. Occurred on: 11/09/13, at 12:31 AM. CLARK FIELD, 300 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: Three UT Students reported having various cards and cash stolen from the bench area at Clark Field. Estimated Loss Value: $189.00 Occurred on: 11/08/13, at 7:10 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 94 Alarm Reports, 4 Unsecured Door Reports, 5 Key Assist Reports, 2 Non-Criminal Fire Reports, 2 Assist Outside Agency Reports, 7 Suspicious Activities Reports, and 3 Welfare Concern Reports between 11/08/13 and 11/12/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
