Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Tuesday, 11/12/13 and Thursday, 11/14/13. 1100 EAST 31ST STREET Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Police Officer observed a red Mustang, traveling north in the 2200 block of the IH 35 access road, approach a red light. The vehicle stopped and proceeded, treating the standing red light as if it were a stop sign. Once stopped, the driver stated that he thought he was stopped for running a yellow light. UT Police Officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the subject as he spoke. After consenting to field sobriety testing, it was determined the subject was intoxicated to a point in which it was not safe to operate motor vehicle. The subject was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/14/13, at 12:34 AM. BERNARD RAPOPORT BUILDING, 2225 SPEEDWAY STREET Criminal Trespass, Computer Security Breach: A Non-UT subject was found in a computer lab located in the 4th floor of the Bernard Rapoport Building. The subject was not authorized to be in the lab and was logged on to a UT computer watching a video. After further investigation, the subject was identified as a frequent flyer with several Criminal Trespass Warnings for the UT Campus. The subject was arrested for Criminal Trespass and Computer Security Breach, prior to being transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/13/13, at 10:05 PM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 WHITIS AVENUE Burglary of Habitation: A UT Student reported her iPhone 4 and silver MacBook Air as stolen from her unsecured dorm room located on the 1st floor of the Kinsolving Dormitory. Estimated Loss Value: $2100.00 Occurred on: 11/13/13, at 8:07 PM. RECSPORTS CENTER, 2001 SAN JACINTO BLVD Theft: A UT Student reported having his brown leather wallet containing $30 cash as stolen from the volleyball courts located at the RecSports Center. Estimated Loss Value: $62.00 Occurred on: 11/13/13, at 2:04 PM. 600 EAST 23RD STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Student was observed stumbling and falling in the roadway in the 600 block of 23rd Street. Once stopped, the subject did his best superhero impersonation transforming into Captain Obvious and immediately raising his hands stating, “I am drunk and had too much to drink.” He also stated he had consumed approximately 4 mixed drinks and he smelled of alcohol. The subject’s superhero powers included lack of balance and slurred speech, leading the UT Police Officer to believe he was intoxicated to a point in which he was a danger to himself and/or others. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/13/13, at 2:28 AM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 SAN ANTONIO STREET Criminal Mischief: A UT Staff member reported two broken out glass lights on the south exterior of the San Antonio Garage. Estimated Damage Value: $100.00 Occurred on: 11/12/13, at 12:21 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 46 Alarm Reports, 4 Light Problem Reports, 5 Suspicious Activities Reports, 1 Welfare Concern Report, and 1 Criminal Trespass Warning Report between 11/12/13 and 11/14/13. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
