Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department between Wednesday, 11/20/13 and Friday, 11/22/13. WITH THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY APPROACHING, I HAVE ATTACHED A REMINDER FROM THE TRAVIS COUNTY ATTORNEY’S UNDERAGE DRINKING TASK FORCE, REGARDING DRINKING AND DRIVING. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Burglary of Habitation: Two UT Students reported multiple items stolen from their unlocked dorm room located on the 7th floor of Jester West Dormitory. Items stolen include approximately $400.00 cash, an Xbox and equipment, clothing, an iPhone and charging cable, an external hard drive, and shoes. Estimated Loss Value: $1000.00 Occurred on: 11/22/13, at 3:00 AM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Public Intoxication: An intoxicated Non-UT male subject was found in the game room area of the Jester East Dormitory. The subject had a strong odor of alcohol coming from him and difficulty balancing. The subject thought the current date was November 6th, 2009 and stated that he had drinks on 6th Street earlier. The subject was brought back to the future as he was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking in a patrol car, rather than the Delorean. Occurred on: 11/22/13, at 2:28 AM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 SAN ANTONIO STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor, Failure to Identify, Public Intoxication, and Possession of Fictitious Driver’s License: A UT Police Officer observed two UT students, one male subject and one female subject, both appeared intoxicated on the first level of the San Antonio Garage. Both subjects had glassy blood shot eyes, slurred speech, and difficulty balancing. Both subjects were under the legal drinking age of 21 and the female subject attempted to use a fake ID, displaying that she was over the age of 21. The female subject was arrested for Failure to ID, Public Intoxication, Possession of a Fictitious DL and was transported to Central Booking. The male subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released on scene to a sober friend. Occurred on: 11/22/13, at 1:56 AM. UT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1616 GUADALUPE STREET Theft, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: A UT Police Officer responded to the area of 1616 Guadalupe Street for a bicycle theft in progress. The bicycle was described as black and yellow in color. A Non-UT subject was found in possession of a bicycle matching the given description and a pair of bolt cutters, in the 300 block of South Lamar Street. The subject was arrested for Theft and was transported to Central Booking. Estimated Loss Value: $730.00 Occurred on: 11/21/13, at 2:58 AM. PICKLE RESEARCH CENTER, 10100 BURNET ROAD Driving While Intoxicated: A UT Guard observed a vehicle approaching the entrance at gate to the Pickle Research Center at a high rate of speed. The vehicle stopped at the gate and the Non-UT driver smelled of alcohol. The subject attempted to use multiple credit cards as a driver’s license to gain access. The UT Guard kept the vehicle on scene until a UT Police Officer arrived. Once on scene, the driver stated that he knows he had too much to drink and should not have been driving. After consenting to sobriety testing, it was clear that the driver was telling the truth, as he was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. Occurred on: 11/21/13, at 1:23 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Theft: A UT Student reported having her secured blue Hybrid stolen from the bicycle located at the Brazos Garage bike racks. Estimated Loss Value: $100.00 Occurred on: 11/20/13, at 11:50 PM. GUADALUPE GARAGE, 417 WEST 17TH STREET Graffiti: A UT Police Officer responded to the Guadalupe Garage regarding writing in permanent black marker on the inside of the 13th level stairwell. Estimated Removal Cost: $100.00 Occurred on: 11/20/13, at 9:04 PM. BRAZOS GARAGE, 200 EAST MARTINLURTHER KING STREET Burglary of Vehicle: A UT Student reported her black Jeep Wrangler soft top had the plastic zipper flap unzipped and a burnt orange fur coat was taken without her effective consent. Estimated Loss Value: $350.00 Occurred on: 11/20/13, at 4:35 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 45 Alarm Reports, 1 Unsecured Door Report, 5 Suspicious Activities Reports, 1 Lost/Found Report, 1 Key Assist Report, 1 Peace Officer’s Emergency Detention Report, 1 Injured Person Report, 1 False 911 Report, 2 Elevator Call Reports, 1 Criminal Trespass Report, and 1 Welfare Concern Report between 11/20/13 and 11/22/13. Registering your property is very helpful in theft investigations and in returning lost property to its rightful owner. SURE Walk is a student-run volunteer group that provides walks to and from campus to UT students, faculty, and staff, with the help of student volunteers. Volunteers are gathered from trusted organizations from around campus, such as Orange Jackets and APO, and include both males and females. An agency of Student Government, SURE Walk is in service Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. Please report your missing property to UTPD Lost and Found at http://www.utexas.edu/police/lostandfound. Or call 512-232-9619 and describe your item to us. If we have your item, we’ll contact you as quickly as possible to arrange its return to you. UTPD handles over 5000 lost and found items each year from campus departments, although we cannot accept clothing, food or drink containers, toiletries, broken or soiled property. Campus departments are encouraged to call 471-4441 to have UTPD pick up lost and found items that are unclaimed after one week. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. For more information, to check for the next available class time or to register on-line go to: http://www.utexas.edu/police/services/defensive_driving.php RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks.
