Report for 12/19/2013

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department during the 2013 year. 2013 BEST OF THE BEST CAMPUS WATCH REPORTS 2300 GUADALUPE STREET Public Intoxication: A UT Police Officer observed a UT Student staggering down the side walk in the 2300 block of Guadalupe Street. The subject then ran into a wall at the entryway of Austin’s Pizza. The subject smelled of alcohol and did not know if he was coming or going as stated he was, “coming from the same address he was going to.” The subject was under legal drinking age of 21 and admitted to having, “no more than four” whiskey drinks. When given the opportunity to phone a sober adult the subject requested his phone back from the UT Police Officer. The only problem with the subject’s request was that he never provided the UT Police Officer a phone and did not possess a phone. When the UT Police Officer told him that he did not have his phone, the subject went “007” and pulled out his BMW car keys and began to use his thumb in a “dialing motion” on the electronic key fob attached to his keys. (I couldn’t make this up if I tried!) After the failed key fob phone call, the UT Police Officer determined the subject was intoxicated to a level in which he was a danger to himself and/or others. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 10/11/13, at 2:59 AM. DARRELL K. ROYAL MEMORIAL STADIUM, 2200 ROBERT DEDMAN DRIVE Public Intoxication: UT Police Officers responded to 11 Public Intoxication calls, located in and around DKR Stadium, during the UT versus Ole Miss Football game. I have included a few of Public Intoxication Arrests lowlights that occurred off the field. -Thinking it was his bed, a male subject was found in a UT golf cart not in control of his faculties. Wait for it….the subject was carted off to jail! -With a Longhorn shaved into his chest hairs, a male subject displayed a lack of balance while attempting to negotiate some stadium stairs. Things got a little more hairy when he fell down the stairs and UT Police Officers arrived. -Keeping with the motto “come early and stay late”, a male subject was found sleeping on a bench outside of the Stadium as he thought the game was scheduled for the following day. -Having worn himself out during pre-game warm ups, a male subject fell asleep twice while attempting to provide his identification to a UT Police Officer. 1900 SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: UT Police Officers spoke to a male UT student in the 1900 block of San Jacinto Blvd., after observing him display signs of intoxication. The subject had a strong odor of alcohol coming from him and stated that he consumed a “very large glass of alcohol” earlier. The subject stated his final destination was on 45th Street and felt his athletic superiority would allow him to make the trip in one to three minutes on foot. The UT Police Officer performed a series of sobriety test and observed several clues of intoxication, even though the subject stated they were “too easy” and “bored” him. The subject was arrested for Public Intoxication and transported to Central Booking, in approximately three minutes. Occurred on: 08/11/13, at 2:55 AM. JESTER WEST, 201 EAST 21ST STREET Possession of Marijuana: A UT Police Officer responded to Jester West Dormitory for a reported smell of marijuana. A Non-UT male subject, associated with a Ballet Company, was identified as the individual currently staying in the room that smelled of marijuana. The subject was not present at the room upon the UT Police Officer’s arrival. The subject’s supervisor was on-scene, contacted him via cellphone and requested that he return. During a consent search of his room, the UT Police Officer found and seized a canister containing marijuana. After a failed performance, the subject was unable to dance his way out of a citation for Possession of Marijuana and was released on-scene. Occurred on: 07/24/2013, at 10:20 PM SAN JACINTO HALL, 309 EAST 21ST STREET Public Intoxication: A Non-UT male subject was seen wandering around the San Jacinto Hall lobby by a staff member. The subject refused to speak to the staff member and was incoherent. A UT Police Officer arrived and observed that the male had a strong smell of alcohol, watery eyes, and trouble balancing. He then decided to instruct the UT Police Officer on the proper way to perform a face plant, as he demonstrated this while attempting to retrieve the contents of his wallet from the floor. After trying to pass a parking garage ticket as his legal form of identification, the UT Police Officer arrested the subject for Public Intoxication, rather than validating his parking. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. Occurred on: 07/31/13, at 2:25 AM. LOT 115, 1600 EAST 20TH STREET Evading Arrest or Detention, Burglary of Vehicle: An alert UT Police Officer observed suspicious movements between two vehicles located in Lot 115. The UT Police Officer saw tools commonly used to extract gas from a vehicle’s gas tank on the pavement between the two vehicles. A Non-UT male subject emerged toward the front of the vehicles and immediately put both of his hands in the air. The subject said he was “getting gas” before quickly fleeing the area. After running several blocks, the subject eventually ran “out of gas” and was stopped by a UT Police Officer at Martin Luther King Blvd. The gassed subject was arrested for Evading Arrest or Detention and Burglary of Vehicle. The subject was transported to Central Booking and released to TCSO personnel. Occurred on: 10/28/13, at 4:05 AM. MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD. SAN JACINTO STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed a Non-UT male subject in a bear costume slumped over his knees at MLK and San Jacinto Street. The subject smelled of alcohol appeared to be “beary” intoxicated. A sober friend was contacted to take responsibility for his furry friend who was found to be under the legal drinking age of 21. The subject was issued a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and released. Occurred on: 11/1/13, at 4:07 AM. 2500 SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A silver Jeep Cherokee was seen disregarding a stop sign north bound at 24th Street and San Jacinto. Once stopped, a UT Police Officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the inside of the vehicle. The driver stated that she and her boyfriend drank a pitcher of rum and coke at a downtown bar called Shakespeare. To be intoxicated or not to be intoxicated was the question. After consenting to field sobriety testing, it was determined that the subject was to be intoxicated to a point that it was not safe to operate a motor vehicle. The subject was arrested for Driving While intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 11/23/13, at 1:20 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 RED RIVER STREET Public Intoxication: UTPD Dispatch received a 911 call from an elevator located in the Special Events Frank Erwin Center. The Non-UT male subject had slow slurred speech (say that 3 times). While en-route UT Police Officers were advised that an unclothed male subject was walking inside the arena and he appeared lost. Even though it was not his birthday, the subject was easily located and detained in his birthday suit by UT Police Officers. Yes this was the Special Events Center, but this is not the type of Special Event the Erwin Center is accustomed to have performed. The subject stated he worked at the Erwin Center earlier in the day then he and his friend went out for drinks at a club, before returning to his place of employment to bare it all. UT Police Officers later located several emptied alcoholic beverage containers in Erwin Center rooms that were accompanied by the subject’s missing clothes, wallet, ID, and keys. Unable to bare it any longer UT Police Officers contacted EMS for further evaluation, with charges pending for Public Intoxication. Occurred on: 10/27/13, at 1:10 AM. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 SPEEDWAY AVENUE Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer responded to a report of a Non-UT male subject sleeping on the northeast exterior of the Sanchez Building. Although the subject was sleeping with no shoes and no shirt, the UT Police Officer still provided him service, by waking him up with a lit flashlight. The subject woke in a less than chipper mood and felt he did not have to speak to the UT Police Officer because we are not “The Real Police”. The UT Police Officer performed a “Real” check of his criminal history and found he had a previous “Real” Criminal Trespass Warning from UTPD. The subject was placed in “Real” handcuffs and arrested for Criminal Trespass. He was then placed in a “Real” patrol car and transported Central Booking to a “Real Jail!” The UT Police Officer was just keeping it “Real”. Occurred on: 08/09/13, at 12:55 PM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 1 Driving While Intoxicated, 1 Criminal Trespass, 2 Lost/Found Reports, and 1 Graffiti between 12/18/13 and 12/19/13.
