Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02/07/14 and Monday, 02/10/14. CLARK FIELD, 300 East 21st Street Theft: A 16 GB i-Pad computer in a white leather case was stolen after it was left unsecured on a table during a sporting event. Loss value: $260.00. Occurred on 02/08/14 between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM. COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS, 305 East 23rd Street Theft: $180.00 in cash was stolen from a purse that was left in a 4th floor break room. Loss value: $180.00. Occurred between 02/06/14 at 11:45 PM and 02/07/14 at 2:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: There were two reported thefts in today’s edition of the Campus Watch. In both cases, the property was left in an area where the owner believed the property was secured or would not be at risk for theft. With your property, always consider the people who have access to the area you are keeping your property. If anyone, other than you, has access to that area, then you should not leave your property unattended or keep it in a secured container in that area. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Harassment: A UT Student friended a non-UT subject on a popular social networking site as the two had several common friends listed on the site. The non-UT subject began to send the student several unwanted messages through the site and via cell phone texts. The student attempted to “unfriend” the subject on the social networking site. The subject showed up at the student’s class in Gregory Gym and demanded she speak with him. The student ran from the area. Occurred between 09/22/14 and 02/06/14. 2600 Whitis Suspicious Activity: A UT Student reported being approached by a male subject in a white car as she walked from Guadalupe Street to the 2600 Block of Whitis. The subject asked the student where the Chemical Petroleum Engineering (CPE) Building was located. The subject told the student to enter his car so she could show him where the CPE building was located and stopped his car near the student. The student did not get into the car and left the area. The subject was described as a Middle Eastern male with a moderate accent, 25- 30 years old, with a thin build, no facial hair and wearing a white, short sleeve, collared shirt and blue jeans. The subject was driving an older model four door sedan that was white in color and had a “boxy” shape. Occurred on 02/07/14 between 4:10 PM and 4:20 PM. Crime Prevention Tips: There are several tips that could apply here. First and foremost, there is safety in numbers. Whenever possible, go places with friends. Always have your cellular telephone on you and keep it charged. The UT Police Department recommends you program our number into your cell phone (512-471-4441). Use that escape route anytime you feel uncomfortable or threatened. Consider taking the RAD course offered by the UT Police Department. The RAD course is a free program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It is a comprehensive course for women which begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767 The RAD program is a 12-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD).
