Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Wednesday, 12/21/15 and Friday, 01/04/16. Thanks to everyone who provided their submissions throughout the year. I hope 2016 is a quiet year with few entries…hopefully fewer then the new year edition below. ANNA HISS GYMNASIUM, 2501 Wichita Criminal Mischief: An upside down trash can was located on the ground near a window that appeared to have been opened from the exterior of the building. A closer inspection revealed the blinds on the interior side of the window were damaged in an apparent unauthorized entry into the building. At the time of the initial investigation, it was unknown if any items had been stolen from the building. Repair cost: $100.00. Discovered on 12/27/15 at 7:55 AM. ARNO NOWOTNY BUILDING, 709 East Martin Luther King Criminal Mischief: Responding to an intrusion alarm, officers located a small hole that had been broken out of a 1st floor window. Based on the size of the hole, it was unlikely entry into the building was achieved. Repair cost: $200.00. Occurred on 01/03/16 at 6:38 PM. BIOLOGY LABORATORY BUILDING, 205 West 24th Street Graffiti: White paint was used to write letters and words on a exterior pipe located on the south side of the building. Removal cost: $30.00. Discovered on 01/01/16 at 12:09 AM. BIOLOGY LABORATORY BUILDING, 205 West 24th Street Graffiti: A black marker was used to write words on a wall in a stairwell. Discovered on 01/01/16 at 12:43 AM. CLAUDIA TAYLOR JOHNSON, 210 West 6th Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed stumbling heavily as he tried to walk. Before the officer could stop the subject, he succumbed to the overwhelming effects of gravity and then rolled into the roadway. The subject was in town with friends to celebrate the coming of the New Year. The friends apparently made a new resolution to abandon this subject as they were nowhere in sight. The subject stated he had a “double and a shot” before being stopped. That amount of alcohol proved to be enough to make him a danger to himself or others as he was taken into custody for public intoxication – Happy New Year! Occurred on 01/01/16 at 2:20 AM. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Theft: A new Apple iPad Pro was delivered to the Dean's Office to be distributed to a UT staff member. After the iPad was tagged as University of Texas property, it was placed in an unsecured box in a 2nd floor mail room for the assigned person to retrieve. Before that staff member could retrieve the iPad, an unknown person retrieved the iPad and absconded with it. Loss value: $1028.00. Occurred between 12/02/15 at 8:39 AM and 12/04/15 at 8:00 AM. COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS, 305 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject as observed attempting to enter the closed building by pulling on door handles. When the subject was stopped, it was learned he had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning and was taken into custody. Occurred on 12/26/15 at 7:20 PM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT patrol officer's random check of the building was interrupted by the sound of someone snoring. The officer followed the audible clues to a sleeping subject on the 3rd floor. The non-UT subject was awakened and issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/27/15 at 2:00 AM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A shoeless, non-UT subject was reported as loitering inside a 1st floor men's restroom stall for more than 30 minutes. The non-UT subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for sleeping on a public sidewalk. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was also issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/24/15 at 2:29 AM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were found loitering on the second floor of the building. Both subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted out of the building. Occurred on 12/24/15 at 5:18 PM. L. THEO BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject smeared a white semi-liquid substance and a brown liquid substance on the walls and floors in several locations throughout the building. The initial investigation pointed toward the substances possibly being ice cream and chocolate syrup. Repair costs: $500.00. Occurred between 12/20/15 at 10:30 PM and 12/21/15 at 8:45 AM. MCDONALD OBSERVATORY, 16120 State Highway78 Fort Davis, Texas Theft of Service / Criminal Trespass: Two non-UT subjects arrived at the Observatory and requested admission to the Solar Viewing Program which was sold out. The hopeful patrons stated they had driven for an hour to attend the program but had not reserved the tickets. When the two non-UT subjects were told the show was sold out, they demanded entry and entered the viewing area without paying the price of admission. By the end of the show, a police officer arrived to speak with the thieving patrons who agreed to pay the admission price and leave for the evening. Occurred on 12/29/15 at 3:36 PM. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Graffiti: A black pen was used to write words on a wall in a 6th floor music practice room. Removal cost: $50.00. Discovered on 12/24/15 at 1:00 AM. PARKING LOT 35, 2200 Comal Disorderly Conduct – Fighting in a Public Place / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Controlled Substance: Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance in progress. Officers found five non-UT subjects in the parking lot and quickly separated all five subjects. Once peace was restored, it was learned the subjects, who all knew each other, had attended a near-by party and were engaged in an argument but not a physical fight. One of the subjects, who under the age of 21, was found to be in possession of a black bag. That subject claimed she was “holding some beers.” The officer soon learned the bag held much more than six cans of beer. The bag also contained a total of .099 ounces of marijuana and .34 grams of the prescription drug Alprazolam (Xanax). Occurred on 01/03/16 at 12:22 AM. PHARMACY BUILDING, 2409 University Criminal Mischief: A patrol officer found the door to a coin operated vending machine located on the south side of the building standing open. Upon further investigation, the lock to the door was missing from the door and no products or money was found inside the machine. The officer checked the other coin operated machines in the area and found a hole had been drilled in a door lock on another machine but entry was not gained. The officer then learned the missing lock on the first machine was the result of a burglary of the machine form earlier in the year. Repair to second machine is estimated at $100.00. Discovered on 12/29/15 at 5:19 AM. PRATHER HALL, 305 East 21st Street Graffiti: A silver paint pen was used to write a word on an outdoor BBQ pit located on the north side of the residence hall. Removal cost: $50.00. Discovered on 12/27/15. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Graffiti: Green paint was used to draw images and write illegible letters on exterior walls to a top floor machine room. Removal cost: $50.00. Discovered on 12/26/15 at 11:50 AM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Graffiti: A black marker was used to write words on a red fire line pipe located in a first floor stairwell. A silver paint pen was also used to draw an image on the door placard to the same stairwell. Removal cost: $60.00. Discovered on 12/26/15 at 4:21 AM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Graffiti: A black marker was used to write words on a 5th floor stairwell door. Removal cost: $40.00. Discovered on 12/26/15 at 4:25 AM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Graffiti: A black marker, a red marker and green spray paint were used to write words and draw images on a stairwell wall located between the first and second floor. Removal cost: $75.00. Discovered on 12/27/15 at 9:00 AM. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found loitering at a bench on the 1st floor of the building. The subject initially claimed to be a student but when that falsehood was discovered he claimed he entered the building with a friend who was a UT student. After that claim could not be verified, he admitted he entered the building the previous evening and had been in the building since that time. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and was escorted from the building. Occurred on 12/27/15 at 8:28 AM. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sitting in a patio area that is reserved for use by faculty, staff and students. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted form the area. Occurred on 12/22/15 at 4:48 PM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 405 West 25th Street Graffiti: Black paint was used to draw images and write illegible words on the south side of the building. Removal cost: $75.00. Discovered on 01/02/16 at 1:23 PM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 405 West 25th Street Criminal Mischief: A non-UT subject was reported as walking around the covered parking garage wearing a shirt and her underwear. The subject was found leaning against a wall in the covered parking area and was fully clothed. The subject made no comment as to why she may have taken her pants off. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and sent on her way. Occurred on 12/23/15 at 12:37 PM. WHITAKER FIELDS, 4700 Speedway Graffiti: Black, grey and red paint were used to draw images on a sign at the entry to the archery range. Removal cost; $40.00. Discovered on 12/25/15 at 3:00 AM. 2300 Guadalupe Possession of Marijuana / Resisting Arrest / Failure to Identify / Tampering with Evidence: A UT police officer detected an odor lingering around a non-UT subject who was seated at a bus stop. The officer confirmed the origin of the odor when the officer witnessed the subject smoking a “blunt style” cigarette. The officer subsequently took the subject into custody for the possession of .02 ounces of marijuana. While taking the subject into custody, the subject forcefully refused to present his hands for cuffing and needed to be placed on the ground in order to gain control of him. Once under control, the subject refused to provide his name and date of birth. While being transported to the local lock-up, the officer noted the subject was restless in the back seat and appeared to jostle his body several times. Once at the lock-up, the officer discovered the subject had partially removed one of his shoes. After the subject was booked into jail, the officer inspected the back seat of his patrol vehicle and discovered .002 ounces of marijuana in the back seat that was not there before the officer transported the subject. Occurred on 12/26/15 at 8:54 PM. 2400 Guadalupe Possession of Alcohol by a Minor (4 Counts) / Open Container in a Motor Vehicle: A dutiful patrolling officer stopped a non-UT driver of a vehicle for operating the vehicle at night without its headlamps turned on. The officer identified the driver and three non-UT passengers inside the vehicle as being under the age of 21. The officer found two cases of beer inside the vehicle and an open cup in the back seat that contained the hops based drink. All four of the vehicle's occupants claimed ownership of the cases of beer but none claimed ownership of the open container. Occurred on 01/02/16 at 12:30 AM. 300 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were reported as sleeping under Waller Creek Bridge at that location. Officers located the slumbering subject and woke them up with the issuance of written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 12/21/15 at 10:35 AM. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 229 Alarm Reports, 5 Fire Alarm Activations, 2 “Police Help” Callbox Activations, 31 Traffic Violations, 2 Motor Vehicle Collisions, 41 Suspicious Activity Reports, 6 Unsecured Door Reports, 3 Medical Emergency Assist Request, 3 Welfare Concern Reports, 4 Found property Reports, 9 Malfunctioning Light Reports, 1 Accidental Damage Report, and 44 Public Assist Requests between 12/21/15 and 01/04/16.
