Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Friday, 01/22/16 and Monday, 01/25/16. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was reported as being “passed out” while experiencing an extreme, involuntary, physical reaction to the over-consumption of an alcoholic beverage. The student's roommate was standing by and advised the student had consumed an unknown quantity of “punch” at a near-by party in a private residence of several like-minded students. The student was intoxicated to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport the student to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Charges were not filed under the medical amnesty law. Reported on 01/24/16 at 1:57 a.m. BLANTON MUSEUM OF ARTS, 200 East Martin Luther King Reckless Damage: A group of approximately eight people were reported as performing skateboard stunts on the benches and walls located on the west side of the building. The eight people scattered upon approach of the officer. The officer did locate fresh skid marks and scratches where the people were conducting their stunts. Repair cost: $200.00. Reported on 01/23/16 at 7:46 p.m. JESTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: UT police officers responded to a 5th floor room on a report of a UT student, who was under the age of 21, who was passed out. Responding officers found the student lying on the floor in a liquid pool of evidence. The student's roommate stated they had gone out and separated earlier in the night. When the roommate returned to their room, he found the student passed out and upheaving that which made the liquid pool. The roommate called 9-1-1 and placed the student in the recovery position. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County needed to transport the student to a local emergency room for further treatment of alcohol poisoning. No charges were filed under the medical amnesty act. Occurred on 01/24/16 at 2:23 a.m. JESTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Assault Causing Bodily Injury: UT police officers responded to a 1st floor room to investigate a physical fight that had occurred between two roommates. Upon arrival, the roommates had been separated and were located in two different rooms. While both roommates sustained injuries, neither one wanted medical assistance. The investigation revealed the roommates engaged in an argument over space usage in the room. Each roommate complained about the other's friends occupying their half of the room. The argument escalated to the point one of the roommates came at the other with a stun gun. In defense, the roommate, without an electronic control device, grabbed a decorative letter “C” and struck the aggressive roommate in the head causing a small cut. The defense, brought to you by the letter “C,” proved less effective than the subsequent defense with a small umbrella. Both roommates were separated and the investigation continues. Reported on 01/24/16 at 7:19 p.m. PERRY-CASTAÑEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as harassing pedestrians as they left the library. Responding officers found the subject, who was indeed yelling at people as they left the library. Officer stopped the subject and issued her a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 01/24/16 at 4:05 p.m. RECREATIONAL SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Theft / Possession of Criminal Instrument / Criminal Trespass Warning: UT Police were notified of the theft of a bicycle in progress from the west side of the Recreational Sports Center. Responding police officers located the bicycle a few blocks away as it was being ridden by a non-UT subject. The subject was stopped and found to be in possession of two cut cable locks, a hand saw and a pair of pliers. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was also issued a written criminal trespass warning. Recovery value: $650.00. Reported on 01/22/16 at 10:01 p.m. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A black Dawes road bike was stolen while it was secured with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the west side of the residence hall. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between 12/15/15 and 01/23/16. STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER, 2201 Speedway Theft / Credit Card Abuse: A black Kate Spade wristlet containing two debit cards, a credit card, two identification cards and $20 in cash was stolen on 01/20/16 between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Later that same day, an unauthorized charged was made on the credit card in the amount of $158.00. Reported on 01/22/16 at 4:25 p.m. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported to have fallen while trying to ascend a flight of stairs. The subject was easily located due to his unbalanced gait. The subject was not injured, but did exhibit several sign of intoxication. When arrested, the subject protested the arrest by exclaiming he should not be arrested as he was “just drunk.” Being drunk was the first half of the equation as he was also found to be a physical danger to himself and others. Occurred on 01/22/16 at 12:11 p.m. 2300 Guadalupe Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was found seated on the sidewalk and appeared to be passed out. The subject was surrounded by a variety of items including a breath freshener tin box. When asked what was in the box, the subject stated “There's some stuff and probably some drug paraphernalia” in the box. Officers did not locate any “stuff” but they did find a glass pipe containing burned marijuana residue. Occurred on 01/24/16 at 4:13 p.m. 2300 Guadalupe Possession of Controlled Substance: A non-UT subject was found seated in his black Chevrolet Cobalt. What drew the attention of the officer was the fact the Chevrolet was stopped in a designated bicycle lane. Upon checking on the subject, officers detected a strong odor of burning marijuana. A search of the vehicle failed to produce any green leafy produce, but it did turn up a small glass bottle containing .03 grams of cocaine. Occurred on 01/23/16 at 3:20 a.m. 2300 Guadalupe Possession of Controlled Substance: A UT police officer observed a non-UT pedestrian smoking what appeared to be a cigar. When the pedestrian observed the police officer, she quickly pulled the cigar from her pursed lips and hide it under her other belongings. The officer approached the subject and asked to see the cigar. The subject produced the cigar which was found to contain .12 grams of the synthetic cannabinoid commonly called K2. Occurred on 01/23/16 at 4:24 p.m. 2300 Guadalupe Possession of Controlled Substance / Assist Outside Agency: Two non-UT subjects were observed sitting on the sidewalk while sharing a hand rolled cigar. As the officer approached the two subjects, the last one holding the “hot potato” dropped it on a blanket the two were seated on. The officer asked the subject was the item was he had dropped and he handed the officer a hand rolled cigar containing .22 grams of the synthetic cannabinoid commonly called K2. The other subject was found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for sitting on a public sidewalk and for smoking – hmm, imagine that. That subject as subsequently found to be in possession of a second hand rolled cigar containing 0.1 ounces of K2. Occurred on 01/24/16 at 4:39 p.m. 2324 Guadalupe Public Intoxication: After completing a traffic stop, a UT police officer was approached by a staff member at a near-by restaurant. The staff member reported an intoxicated subject inside his restaurant. The officer checked the restaurant and found a UT student slumped over in a seat with his eyes closed. When woken, the student displayed several signs of intoxication. In lieu of arrest, the student was turned over to a sober responsible friend who arrived at the restaurant. Occurred on 01/23/16 at 3:53 a.m. 2400 Guadalupe Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was found sitting behind a trash dumpster. When the subject saw the officer, he stood up which exposed a hypodermic needle dangling from his left forearm. The subject removed the needle. The subject admitted he had used the needle to inject “speed” into his system. Occurred on 01/23/16 and 7:58 p.m. 2400 San Jacinto Public Intoxication: UT police officers responded to the intersection of 24th Street and San Jacinto to investigate a bicyclist who had fallen. Officers found the UT student in the roadway and uninjured. The student admitted to having had “a few beers.” The alcohol consumption added to the bicycle wreck provided all the evidence needed to support a public intoxication charge. In lieu of such charge, the student was released to his older brother who quickly arrived on scene. Occurred on 01/22/16 at 4:19 p.m. 300 West 24th Street Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Controlled Substance / Tampering with Evidence / Possession of Fictitious License: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving at night without the vehicle's headlamps activated. The subject had a difficult time maintaining his balance while exiting his vehicle. A failed field sobriety test led to the arrest of the subject for driving while intoxicated. After the subject was placed in the back seat of the patrol car, an officer noticed a plastic baggie on the back seat that contained several white pills. The subject was removed from the back seat and a second baggie containing white pills was found on the floorboard. The subject admitted the pills were the prescription drug Xanax but the pills were from a “bad press” and were not any good. The subject stated he had planned to sell the pills or trade them with friends for marijuana before he was arrested. The subject had hidden the pills down the front of his pants prior to being stopped and hoped to conceal them in the back of the patrol car to avoid prosecution. After all of that, the subject was also found to be in possession of a fictitious driver's license which purported him to be older than his correct age of 18. Occurred on 01/24/16 at 2:58 a.m. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 59 Alarm Reports, 47 Traffic Violations, 5 Motor Vehicle Collisions, 17 Suspicious Activity Reports,1 Welfare Concern Report, 5 Medical Emergency Assist Requests, 1 Found Property Report, and 11 Public Assist Requests between 01/22/16 and 01/25/16.
