Report for 01/27/2016

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Tuesday, 01/26/16 and Wednesday, 01/27/16. BLANTON RESIDENCE HALL, 2500 University Theft: A UT student reported he had located his bicycle, which had been stolen prior to the 23rd of January. The student stated he found his bicycle secured to a metal pole located near Blanton Residence Hall. The responding officer was able to verify the ownership of the bicycle through the Parking and Transportation Services bicycle registration program. During the investigation, a second UT student approached and stated the bicycle was hers. That student told the officers she bought the bicycle from somebody on Craig's List for $60.00. The bicycle was removed from the pole and returned to the original owner. Reported on 01/26/16 at 3:28 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: I have an opportunity to present several tips here. First, if you are a victim of a crime, report it to the police department. In this case, the original owner of the bicycle did not make a police report when the theft occurred. If the police do not know about a crime then they can't do anything about it. Secondly, the original owner received his bicycle because he could prove ownership of the bicycle via the bicycle registration program. If you own or operate a bicycle on campus you should register the bicycle with Parking and Transportation Services at: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/bike/registration.html To capture the serial number of your other valuables, you can register those items with the UT Police Department at: https://police.utexas.edu/ Finally, when shopping second hand, keep in mind that the items you seek may have been stolen. Remember the Latin phrase Caveat emptor which loosely translated means “Let the buyer beware.” If you purchase stolen property it can be taken away from you without compensation if the police locate the property. Criminal charges could be filed against you as well. To help protect yourself, always ask for a bill of sale and request the seller provide you some verification of his or her name (a photo ID works well, but showing any form of identification at the time of sale can be beneficial). If a seller does not want to show identification then you may want to consider finding your treasures elsewhere.
