Report for 02/03/2016

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Tuesday, 02/02/16 and Wednesday, 02/03/16. ****Scam Alert**** With a new school semester comes an old scam. Apparently, the scam artists are back at it. The UT Police Department has heard from more students about the IRS scam. In this scam, the scammer locates student information in the on-line directory. The scammer then clones a law enforcement telephone number, calls the student and pretends to be a law enforcement officer. The scammer then tells the student there is a warrant for their arrest due to back taxes or unpaid “student taxes.” The scammer then directs the student to purchase a prepaid credit card. The scammer then directs the student to provide the credit card information. To prevent receiving these phone calls, restrict your information in the UT directory. If you would like to restrict your information, visit: http://registrar.utexas.edu/students/records/restrictmyinfo ****Notice from the Austin Police Department**** A district representative for the Austin Police Department Baker District reached out to the UT Police Department and asked us to assist in alerting the student body about a parking concern in the Eastwood Neighborhood (just north of Dean Keeton Street). Due to complaints of illegally parked vehicles, the Austin Police Department will be checking the Eastwood Neighborhood for illegally parked vehicles and issuing citations. If you have been parking illegally in this neighborhood and do not want a parking citation, either park legally or park somewhere else. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Theft: A black Trayl bicycle was stolen while the back tire and frame were secured together with a u-lock and the bike frame was secured with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the north side of the building. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between 02/01/16 at 9:30 p.m. and 02/02/16 at 1:44 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: The thief in this case probably defeated the cable lock, at the scene, and then carried or drove the bicycle to a hidden place to work on the u-lock. To enhance your bicycle security, use a u-lock and a cable lock to secure your bicycle to bike racks. This forces the thief to defeat both locks at the bike rack. It also requires the thief to carry two different tools; one to defeat a u-lock and another to defeat a cable lock. PICKLE RESEARCH CAMPUS, 10100 Burnet Duty Upon Striking a Fixed Object: An unknown vehicle struck the entry control arm located on the north side of the campus. The driver of the striking vehicle failed to leave driver information prior to leaving the scene. Repair cost: $150.00. Reported on 02/02/16 at 11:00 a.m. 2300 Guadalupe Possession of Dangerous Drug: A non-UT subject was observed smoking a hand rolled cigar. Upon seeing a police officer, the subject put the cigar down and picked up a cigarette. The officer discovered the discarded cigar contained .027 ounces of the synthetic cannabinoid commonly called “K2.” Occurred on February 2, 2016 at 1:24 p.m. 2100 IH35 Frontage Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed stumbling into the roadway several times as she attempted to walk. When asked where she was headed, the subject stated she was drunk and wanted to walk home. The subject was walking in the opposite direction of where she lived. The officer attempted to call the subject's spouse but discovered his phone was turned off. The subject then requested we contact her out-of-state mother-in-law to come take care of her. We do our best to turn intoxicated people over to someone who can care for them, but an out-of-state request just isn't feasible. Occurred on 02/02/16 at 8:37 p.m. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 27 Alarm Reports, 2 “Police Help” Callbox Activations, 10 Traffic Violations, 8 Suspicious Activity Reports, 3 Medical Emergency Assist Requests, 1 Unsecured Door Report, 2 Welfare Concern Reports, and 1 Public Assist Request between 02/02/16 and 02/03/16.
