Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Thursday, 03/17/16 and Friday, 03/18/16. ****Travel Safety**** With Spring Break winding down, it is time to offer a few safety tips for your return to the 40 Acres. First and foremost, make sure you leave nothing behind. Make sure you pack everything. Check and double check your hotel room before you check out of the hotel. Do not leave your luggage, backpack, igloo cooler or whatever you are using to pack your treasures unattended – not in the hallway of the hotel, the hotel front desk or at your car. Speaking of your car, before you head out, check the tire pressure, fluid levels, belts and hoses. Start your trip with a full tank of gas and a fully charged cell phone. If you don't have a car charger for your cellphone, pick one up before you leave town. Plan your route home and review a map before you leave. Make sure you check out road closures at https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/. On that site, you will see IH-10 at the Texas Louisiana boarder is closed due to flooding. Looking at a map on your cellphone before you drive is a good idea. Looking at a map on your cellphone while you are driving can have devastating results. Maintain the speed limit and enjoy the ride home. Don't be distracted by your phone, your cheeseburger and fries or other calamities in the car. Don't follow the vehicle in-front of you to closely. The rule of thumb is a 2 second following distance; I say double that and give 4 seconds. Never drive tired. Falling asleep at the wheel is a recipe for a collision. Be a courteous driver. Driving is a social engagement that requires attention and patience by all. That attention and patience may be put to the test once you arrive in Austin. We all know how frustrating Austin traffic can be and this week is no different. With the Travis County Rodeo in full swing and SXSW winding down, traffic is inundated with visitors from all around. Show them some Texas Hospitality and be patient. Once you arrive home, take a few minutes to look around your house or apartment for signs of someone illegally subletting your residence for the week. Look at the doors and windows to make sure they are closed and locked. If you believe someone broke into your home, call the police and do not go inside. Finally, while unloading your car, don't leave your car unattended and unsecured while moving your packages inside.
