Prevention is key with this scam and we have done a variety of things to get the word out about this scam, how it works and what people can do to prevent this scam from happening. In addition to Campus Watch entries with crime prevention tips, we have conducted media interviews on the subject matter, sent alerts to various campus departments, made posts on the police Department's Facebook page and Twitter accounts, contacted local stores that sell pre-paid credit cards and money grams…everything short of contacting every student individually. The word must get out. As of the posting of this edition, there are 17,699 subscribers to the Campus Watch. I implore each one of you to share this scam with five people today. Discuss the scam with classmates before one of your classes, highlight this entry and forward the Campus Watch to students you know. Print a copy and post it on a reading board you have authority to post on – do something. Again, the perpetrators of this scam clone an official number of a law enforcement agency, the IRS, the FBI, and even your school's financial aid office. They do this to convince you they are a legitimate authority to get you to send them money. Law enforcement will not call you and demand payment over the phone to avoid an arrest. Finally, these thieves are more than likely obtaining your contact information from the on-line directory. Visit the UT Registrar's Office to have your contact information restricted from public view. You can do that at http://registrar.utexas.edu/students/records/restrictmyinfo The University of Texas Police Department responded to 19 Alarm Reports, 1 “Police Help” Callbox Activation, 8 Traffic Violations, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Medical Emergency Assist Requests, 3 Welfare Concern Reports, and 4 Public Assist Requests between 03/22/16 and 03/23/16.
