Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Tuesday, 04/05/16 and Wednesday, 04/06/16. Yesterday, a crime that would shake any community to its foundation was discovered on the Forty Acres. A deceased female subject was found in the Waller Creek area. While we cannot provide many details at this time, please know that multiple law enforcement agencies, in central Texas, are working together to not only solve this horrible crime but also to patrol the campus. Our primary focus is the safety of our students, our employees and the visitors of this fine institution. The University of Texas at Austin Police Department encourages anyone who may have information about this crime to contact the police department at 512-471-4441; option 9. The UT Police Department would like to offer the following safety recommendations: - When walking you should be mindful of your surroundings. Keep your head up and your eyes open. Save the cellphone call or text for a time when you are not as vulnerable. - Make sure you can hear the happenings around you. Do not put both ear buds in your ears if listening to music. Let one ear bud dangle so you can hear things around you. - Trust your instincts. If you find yourself in a situation or location that does not feel safe or comfortable, change your environment and do so immediately. - Learn well lit, heavily travelled, routes and use those routes. - Do not be afraid to be loud. If you need help; scream for help. - Walking in groups is always safer. - The University of Texas at Austin Student Government runs a program called SURE Walk. The SURE Walk program provides foot escorts from two volunteers when requested. The volunteers are form trusted student organizations and consist of one female volunteer and one male volunteer. The program operates Monday through Thursday evenings from 10 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. For more information about this program, visit: http://utsg.org/projects/sure-walk/ - The University of Texas at Austin Police Department will provide a courtesy escort when requested and based on availability. Contact the police dispatcher at 512-471-4441; option 9 to request a courtesy escort. - Learn what you can do to defend yourself. There are several options available to enhance your ability to protect and defend yourself. The UT Police Department offers the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) Program to female faculty, staff and student members. In this program, students learn a variety of things including situational awareness, crime prevention and basic, hands-on self-defense techniques. For more information about the RAD program, visit: http://police.utexas.edu/rad/ . Other campus options include joining a recreational sports club that focuses on one of the many self-defense techniques or martial arts. You could also take informal classes pertaining to self-defense techniques. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A silver colored MacBook Pro was stolen from a backpack that was left under a bench in a 2nd floor locker room. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on 04/05/16 between 1:45 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. UNIVERSITY POLICE BUILDING, 2201 Robert Dedman Attempted Fraud: The UT Police Department was notified that a UT student had received a telephone call from a subject claiming to be a “Senior Advisor” with The University of Texas at Austin. The caller called from a cloned telephone number for the UT Financial Services Office. The caller told the student she owed back taxes and would be arrested if she did not make a payment via a money wire. The caller told the student to go to a local Wal-Mart and wire money to an individual in another state. If the student failed to make a payment, a law enforcement agency would arrest her. The student then received a conference call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer from the other state. Fearing arrest, the student went to a local Wal-Mart to make a money wire. Fortunately for the student, the employee recognized the student was on the phone while making a money wire and asked the student if she knew the caller. When the student stated she didn't know the caller, the Wal-Mart employee told the student the call sounded like a scam and she should disconnect the call. The student did just that – Kudos to that Wal-Mart employee.
