Report for 06/06/2016

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Friday, 06/03/16 and Monday, 06/06/16. ****Bike Locking Tips**** This weekend, a reader of the Campus Watch contacted me to report the theft of a bicycle from an off-campus location. While I had to refer the reader to the Austin Police Department, I was able to determine we need to do more in describing how to secure your bicycle. In this case, the owner had a u-lock securing the bicycle's rear wheel to the frame and a cable lock securing the bicycle's front wheel and frame to a bicycle rack. I would surmise the thief in this case used a cutting device to cut the cable then transported the rear wheel and frame to a private location to defeat the u-lock. Your best bet for securing your bicycle is to use a cable lock and a u-lock, but you always want to make sure the u-lock is used to secure the front wheel and frame to the bicycle rack. The cable lock would then be used to secure the rear wheel and frame to the bicycle rack.
