Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Friday, 07/01/16 and Tuesday, 07/05/16. AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Criminal Mischief / Theft: UT police officers responded to a 4th floor room to investigate a report of a disturbance and theft. Upon arrival, the officers met with two of the room's over-night guests. The officer learned the two remaining guests had gotten into an argument and eventual fight with the room's third over-night guest. During the fight, the third guests damaged several items belonging to the first two guests. At the conclusion of the fight, the third guest gathered all of her property and property belonging to the first two guests and left the room. The officers were able to locate the third guest and retrieve the stolen property. None of the three guests sustained any injuries during the fight. Loss value: $60.00. Reported on 07/04/16 at 4:10 a.m. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 210 East Martin Luther King Theft: On 06/29/16 at 10:44 a.m., a wheel immobilizing device (wheel boot) was properly affixed to the front left tire of a grey Dodge Challenger for multiple unpaid parking violations. A UT Parking and Transportation staff member checked on the vehicle on 07/01/16 at 10:30 p.m. to discover the Challenger and the boot were no longer parked on the 1st level of the parking garage. Loss value: $350.00. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 210 East Martin Luther King Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject forced the east exit control arm off of its track causing the control mechanism to fail. Repair cost: $200.00. Occurred on 07/04/16 between 1:00 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. CALHOUN HALL, 204 West 21st Street Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was found sleeping on a bench on the outside of the building. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for theft. After being taken into custody, the subject was found to be in possession of 8 capped syringes and a spoon with burned heroin residue. Occurred on 07/02/16 at 10:26 a.m. GATES DELL COMPLEX, 2317 Speedway Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member reported seeing a subject who matched the description of a theft suspect loitering inside the building. Responding officer located the subject a block away and discovered the subject was in possession of a backpack that matched the description of a stolen backpack that had been reported the previous week. In addition, the subject was found to have been previously issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. The subject was taken into custody for criminal trespass and the investigation of the theft continues. Occurred on 07/01/16 at 10:34 a.m. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1616 West 6th Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed stumbling between two buildings. The subject stated he was unsure of his location or the time of day. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. In lieu of being arrested, the subject was turned over to a sober, responsible adult who was willing to assume care, custody and control of the subject. Occurred on 07/03/16 at 4:14 a.m. GUADALUPE PARKING GARAGE, 417 West 17th Street Graffiti: A black marker was used to write illegible words on a wall located on the top level of the northwest stairwell. Removal cost: $50.00. Occurred on 07/04/16 between 9:04 a.m. and 1:10 p.m. 2100 Guadalupe Theft: A non-UT subject flagged down a patrolling patrol officer and reported he had lost his cellular telephone in downtown Austin on 06/29/16. The subject used the phone's find my phone app to track the phone to a near-by location. The officer called the phone and spoke with the subject who was in possession of the phone. Not knowing he was speaking to an officer, the subject stated he found the phone and was willing to return it for a reward and a two night stay at a local five star hotel. The subject agreed to a meeting and was surprised to find out he had brokered a deal with a peace officer with arrest authorities. The phone was recovered and returned to its rightful owner. Occurred on 07/01/16 at 11:48 a.m. 2600 Nueces Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student was stopped for driving his blue BMW at night without the headlamps illuminated. As the police officer approached the vehicle, the student began to drive away slowly which prompted the officer to return to his patrol vehicle and initiate a traffic stop again. When stopped for the final time, the student seemed out of sorts and stated he had just come from Pasadena where he attended a party on 24th Street. When asked if he had any alcoholic beverage to drink the student replied “some.” Apparently “some” alcohol consumption is enough to warrant arrest for driving while intoxicated as that is what followed. Occurred on 07/03/16 at 2:50 a.m. 2400 Rio Grande Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found passed out with his head resting on a trash dumpster. When awakened, the subject displayed an inability to stand without assistance. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a physical danger to himself and others. In lieu of being arrested, the subject was turned over to a sober, responsible adult who was willing to assume care, custody and control of the subject. Occurred on 07/04/16 at 1:29 a.m. 1600 San Antonio Possession of Controlled Substance / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was found loitering in an alleyway. Upon approach of a uniformed UT patrol officer, the subject started making furtive movements. The root of the subject's suspicious behavior was later determined to be the .10 grams of methamphetamines and glass pipe the subject had on his person. Occurred on 07/04/16 at 2:11 a.m. 1900 San Jacinto Driving Wrong Way on a One-Way Street / Driving while Intoxicated / Driving While License Invalid / Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving the wrong on a one-way roadway. The front end of the subject's Cadillac had recent damage. The officer approached the subject and detected the odor of alcohol and an odor of marijuana wafting from the subject. The subject was found to have 18 suspensions on her driver's license. The subject could not produce any proof of financial responsibility. The subject promptly took and failed the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. During a search of the vehicle, a plastic baggie containing .03 ounces of marijuana and a pipe containing burned marijuana residue was discovered. Occurred on 07/04/16 at 2:43 a.m. San Jacinto and Martin Luther King Assist Outside Agency: A UT police officer observed a vehicle stopped at a red light intersection. The vehicle had an expired registration. After the stopping the vehicle, the non-UT driver was found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for running a red light and for speeding. Occurred on 07/01/16 at 4:30 p.m. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 73 Alarm Reports , 1 Fire Alarm Activation, 1 “Police Help” Callbox Activation, 41 Traffic Violations, 3 Unsecured Door Reports, 32 Foot Patrols, 3 Found Property Reports, 2 Courtesy Escorts, 1 Malfunctioning Light Report, 13 Suspicious Activity Reports, 3 Medical Emergency Assists, and 7 Public Assists between 07/01/16 and 07/05/16.
