Report for 07/19/2016

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Monday, 07/18/16 and Tuesday, 07/19/16. ****Administrative Message**** The UT Police Department has received several complaints from pedestrians about bicyclists riding their bicycles on the sidewalk near the construction area at 24th Street and Speedway. In Texas, bicyclists are required to follow the same laws as operators of motor vehicles; which includes riding in the roadway. Expect to see an increase of officers in the area to provide public education in the form of warnings to be followed by the issuance of citations if the safety in the area does not improve over the coming days. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping on the northwest side of the building. The subject was awoken and issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 07/19/16 at 1:45 a.m. NORTH OFFICE ANNEX, 101 East 27th Street Theft: A UT staff member reported being approached by an unidentified subject on the west side of the building. The subject requested a ride from the staff member who willingly provided the ride. After dropping the subject off at a gas station near Chicon Street and Martin Luther King Blvd, the staff member drove his car back to work. Once the staff member parked his car, he realized no good deed goes unpunished as his Apple iPhone 6 had been stolen from the center cup holder of his vehicle. The subject was described as a black male in his 50's and wearing a white t-shirt and faded blue jeans. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on 07/18/16 between 3:25 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: You should never let a stranger in your car. Being a victim of a theft is just one of many crime and safety concerns with picking-up a hitchhiker. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A light blue colored Roadmaster bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a chain lock to the bicycle racks located on the northeast side of the residence hall. The cut chain lock was located nearby. Loss value: $88.00. Occurred between 07/15/16 at 11:00 a.m. and 07/18/16 at 1:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: The minimum recommendation for bicycle security on campus is a quality u-lock that uses a flat key. Cable locks and chain locks are just too easy to defeat with a small cutting device. If you truly want to protect your bicycle use a quality u-lock and an independently locking cable lock at the same time. Each type of lock requires a different tool to defeat. If you use both locks, you force a thief to carry two different tools and take twice as long to defeat both locks. If you only want to use one lock then you should use a quality u-lock. You should also register your bicycle with UT Parking and Transportation Services. This is required, it's free and can easily be done on-line at: http://parking.utexas.edu/bike/ By registering your bicycle, you will capture the make, model, color, and serial number of your bicycle. Detectives have a difficult time locating lost or stolen property without this vital information. If you would like to register your other valuables, visit the UT Police Webpage at www.utexas.edu/police The University of Texas Police Department responded to 12 Alarm Reports, 1 “Police Help” Callbox Activation, 2 Fire Alarm Activations, 8 Traffic Violations, 10 Foot Patrols, 2 Unsecured Door Reports, 9 Suspicious Activity Reports, 3 Malfunctioning Light Reports, 1 Courtesy Escort, and 4 Public Assists between 07/15/16 and 07/18/16.
