She told officers that she received a call from a man who identified himself as federal law enforcement and demanded that she pay $2,500 in “student taxes”. She told him that she only had $1,500 in her account and he told that would be enough and to make the payment in iTunes gift cards. After submitting payment, she grew suspicious of the call and reported the incident to police. Occurred on 09/14/16 at 1:36 p.m. ***Crime Prevention Tip: UTPD receives calls every day about students or staff members being contacted with similar types of scams. Many of these callers are also able to mimic the phone numbers for law enforcement agencies and UT institutions. Do not rely on a caller ID to establish the caller's identity. Be aware that these callers attempt to use fear tactics to get you to stay on the line and provide the information they want. In general, do not give out any personal or financial information to any person who calls you on the phone. If someone calls you and requests that information, ask for their name, a case or file number, then hang up. Independently locate the contact information for the institution that they claimed to represent and ask for information on the case or file number that you received. You can also contact UTPD if you any questions about the authenticity of a call that you receive. *** 2000 BLOCK OF GUADALUPE ST Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 1: Less than 1 gram / Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 2A: Less than 2 oz: UTPD Dispatch received a call about a female subject passed out on a bench near this location. Our officer located and identified the non-UT subject. While making sure that the woman did not need medical assistance, the officer noticed several items in her open purse that the officer knew were used to smoke synthetic cannabinoids, or “K2”. When the officer asked the woman what those packages were, she handed them to him. After the officer recovered from his surprise of being handed a package full of K2, he placed the woman under arrest. Based on the subject's behavior and information gained from other law enforcement agencies, the officer became suspicious that there was more than just synthetic cannabinoids in the package. Further testing proved that the package also contained phencyclidine, more commonly known as PCP. Occurred on 09/14/16 at 8:54 p.m. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 Alarm Reports, 14 Traffic Violations, 8 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Welfare Concern, 1 Police “Emergency Help” Callbox Activation, 1 Assist Other Law Enforcement Agency Requests, 2 Motor Vehicle Collisions, 8 Foot Patrols, and 4 Public Assists between 09/14/16 and 09/15/16.
