Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Wednesday, 09/28/16 and Friday, 09/30/16. *** National Night Out: UTPD will be participating in several National Night Out events next week. On 10/03/16 at 6pm we will be at the San Jacinto Hall courtyard for an event hosted by the Division of Housing and Food. On 10/04/16 at 10am we will be at Gregory Gym Plaza for a Safety Week event hosted by Student Government. On 10/04/16 at 6pm we will be at both the Gateway Community Room and The University Co-Op Food Court. Please join us for a great opportunity to get to know your local officers and learn about UTPD services that are available to you. *** PAINTER HALL, 103 West 24th Street Theft: A UT student reported that an unattended cellphone was stolen from this location. Estimated loss value: $635. Reported on 09/28/16 at 10:18 a.m. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 2st Street Fraud: A UT student reported that she received a call from a man claiming to be an IRS agent. The man stated that the student owed $3,000 in “student taxâ€. He told her that she could not hang up and needed to purchase iTunes gift cards in order to pay the tax. The student purchased $2,000 worth of iTunes cards and gave the card information to the caller. Occurred on 09/28/16 at 3:38 p.m. *** CRIME PREVENTION TIP: The IRS will not contact you about debts over the phone and they do not accept payment in the form of iTunes gift cards. The people that commit these frauds are very good at using high-pressure tactics to keep their victims from thinking about the request or getting help from others while they have them on the phone. As a general rule, do not give out any personal or financial information to anyone who contacts you by phone. If you doubt the authenticity of a call, ask for a case or file number, hang up, then contact the agency they claim to represent yourself. *** COMMUNICATIONS BUILDING B, 2504-B Whitis Avenue Theft: a UT student reported the theft of her bicycle from a bicycle rack at this location. The bicycle was secured with a cable lock. Occurred on 09/28/16 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. RECREATIONAL SPORTS BUILDING, 2001 San Jacinto Boulevard Criminal Trespass: UTPD Dispatch received a call from an off-duty officer who reported there was a man knocking over trashcans and stopping pedestrians near this location. Our officers located the non-UT subject with a vendetta towards trash receptacles and found that the man had an active criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 09/28/16 at 12:25 a.m. 100 BLOCK OF INNER CAMPUS DR Driving While Intoxicated: A patrolling UTPD officer found a vehicle driving on the sidewalk near this location. Based on her poor driving habits and the strong odor of alcohol coming from the non-UT driver's breath, the officer began to suspect that she was intoxicated. The driver relayed a confusing story involving “shots of beer†at a local drinking establishment. The driver also used some very colorful language to state she believed that she had made a mistake and expressed that she regretted her actions. Our officers determined that she was too intoxicated to operate a motor vehicle safely and placed her under arrest. Occurred on 09/29/16 at 12:59 a.m. LITTLEFIELD DORMITORY, 201 West Dean Keeton Street Theft: A UT student reported the theft of her bicycle from this location. The bicycle had been secured to a rack with a chain lock. Estimated loss value: $101. Reported on 09/29/16 at 3:16 p.m. UNIVERSITY POLICE BUILDING, 2201 Robert Dedman Drive Fraud: A UT student reported that she received a call from a man who said he was an IRS agent. He claimed that the student owed “student taxes†in the amount of $1,100. The caller used high-pressure tactics to keep the student on the line while she purchased iTunes gift cards and transferred the card information to the caller. Estimated loss value: $650. Occurred on 09/29/16 at 3:32 p.m. UNION BUILDING, 2308 Whitis Avenue Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member reported that there was a man in a hospital gown sitting on the patio of this building. Our officers responded to check on the non-UT subject and found that he had a previous criminal trespass warning for all UT property. Our officers placed the man under arrest. Occurred on 09/29/16 at 10:00 p.m. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 56 Alarm Reports, 6 Traffic Violations, 21 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Motor Vehicle Collision, 6 Police “Emergency Help†Callbox Activations, 3 Welfare Concerns, 6 Medical Emergencies, 3 Foot Patrols, and 7 Public Assists between 09/28/16 and 09/30/16.
