Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Friday, 09/30/16 and Monday, 10/03/16 *** National Night Out: UTPD will be participating in several National Night Out events this week. On 10/03/16 at 6pm we will be at the San Jacinto Hall courtyard for an event hosted by the Division of Housing and Food. On 10/04/16 at 10am we will be at Gregory Gym Plaza for a Safety Week event hosted by Student Government. On 10/04/16 at 6pm we will be at both the Gateway Community Room and The University Co-Op Food Court. Please join us for a great opportunity to get to know your local officers and learn about UTPD services that are available to you. *** PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported that an unattended cellphone was stolen from this location. Estimated loss value: $150. Reported on 09/30/16 at 1:24 p.m. 1900 BLOCK OF RIO GRANDE ST Possession of Marijuana 2oz or Less: A UTPD officer noticed a vehicle ran a red light at this location. When our officer spoke to the non-UT driver, he began to suspect that the driver's inattention was possibly related to a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car. The officer shared this information with the driver and ordered all the passengers to exit the vehicle so a search could be searched. As the occupants of the vehicle exited, one of the passengers admitted that he had marijuana and gave it to the officer. The passenger was given a citation and released. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 12:00 a.m. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana 2oz or Less: a UT student reported a strong smell of marijuana coming from a hallway at this location. Our officers were able to determine which room the smell was coming from and spoke with the UT student occupant. The man told officers that he had recently attended a local music festival and that he believed the smell was coming from his clothing. Based on the overwhelming nature of the smell, our officers disagreed and the UT student eventually admitted that he had marijuana in the room. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 12:04 a.m. 2300 BLOCK OF SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A UTPD officer noticed a UT student who seemed to be having a hard time maintaining his balance on a level sidewalk. After observing the man concede his valiant fight with gravity, our officer stopped to check on him. The officer found that the man had consumed alcohol to the point that he was a danger to himself. Luckily, the officer was also able to locate a sober adult who agreed to assume care, custody, and control of the man until he sobered up. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 2:12 a.m. 2300 BLOCK OF SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: While responding to the above listed call, a UTPD officer located two UT students who were fighting a similar losing battle with gravity. When the officer approached them, they laid down on the nearby grass and attempted to explain their circumstances in Spanish. Despite being bilingual, the officer was unable to determine what they were saying and summoned medical assistance. Travis County EMS took the subjects to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 2:31 a.m. GOLDSMITH HALL, 310 Inner Campus Drive Criminal Trespass: UTPD Dispatch received a 911 call from an emergency callbox at this location. The dispatcher relayed to officers that someone was screaming into the callbox. Our officers responded and located a non-UT subject who frequently activates this callbox for non-emergency reasons, which violates the written criminal trespass warnings he has received. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 5:39 a.m. 2100 BLOCK OF SAN JACINTO BLVD Public Intoxication: A UTPD officer noticed a person passed out at the bus stop near this location. Our officers woke the non-UT subject up and found that she was unable to sit unassisted. Our officers contacted EMS who transported the woman to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 11:35 p.m. 2100 BLOCK OF RIO GRANDE ST Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 1 < 1 gram: A patrolling UTPD officer noticed a vehicle driving with no headlights on near this location. The officer stopped the vehicle and discovered that the driver was a designated driver who was unfamiliar with the vehicle's controls. The officer issued the driver a verbal warning for the violation, then turned his attention to the strong smell of marijuana coming from the nine passengers. On the subsequent search, our officers located a bag of cocaine which belonged to one of the passengers. That passenger was arrested and driver and other passengers released. Occurred on 10/01/16 at 10:47 p.m. 2600 BLOCK OF GUADALUPE ST Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 2 <1 gram: A UTPD officer noticed a vehicle make an illegal turn without signaling and then accelerate to an unsafe speed. Our officer stopped the vehicle and found that the UT student driver had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. Being a highly trained investigator, our officer suspected that this might have something to do with the poor driving habits he observed. After conducting Standard Field Sobriety Tests, our officer determined that he was correct. During a search of the driver's person, officers also located a baggy that contained several pills. From the officer's training, he suspected that these were MDMA (commonly referred to as Ecstasy). Field testing proved the officer correct again and the driver was arrested for both charges. Occurred on 10/02/16 at 12:10 a.m. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 57 Alarm Reports, 31 Traffic Violations, 20 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Motor Vehicle Collisions, 3 Police “Emergency Help” Callbox Activations, 6 Assist Other Law Enforcement Agency Requests, 3 Welfare Concerns, 2 Medical Emergencies, 12 Foot Patrols, and 4 Public Assists between 09/30/16 and 10/03/16.
