Report for 11/07/2016

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University Police Department Patrol Officers between Friday, 11/04/16 and Monday, 11/07/16. GARRISON HALL, 128 Inner Campus Drive Theft: A UT laptop was stolen out of an office sometime over the last month. Estimated loss value: $900. Reported on 11/04/16 at 11:50 a.m. JOHN W. HARGIS HALL, 1823 Red River Street Graffiti: A UT staff member reported seeing graffiti in a restroom stall at this location. Officers located a greeting written in blue ink at this location. Estimated cost of removal: $20. Reported on 11/04/16 at 2:23 p.m. TRINITY GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Street Assault: UTPD Dispatch got a callbox activation from this garage. Our officers responded and found several non-UT subjects who claimed that they had been attacked by a woman. All three stated that they found a woman standing in a parking space in the garage and attempted to have a rational discussion about the practicality of saving a parking space by standing in it. The woman appeared to concede the discussion by leaving the area. But when she exited their vehicle, the other woman forcefully dissented from their point of view by hitting them with their own car doors and her purse. Nearby bystanders pulled the woman away and when officers spoke to the alleged aggressor, she confirmed that she had attacked three people over a parking space. Occurred on 11/04/16 at 7:50 p.m. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Alcohol by a Minor (x7): An RA reported hearing complaints of a loud party and when he spoke to the residents of the room he saw an open container of alcohol. When UTPD officers arrived at the room, they found seven UT students waiting calmly with an open container of liquor. The students told officers that they were told that the police were on their way so they stopped dancing and waited for them to arrive. Due to the unprecedented level of honesty and cooperation that the officers experienced, they forwarded the case to the Dean of Students rather than file criminal charges. Occurred on 11/05/16 at 1:35 a.m. TEXAS SWIM CENTER, 1900 Red River Street Theft: A UT student reported the theft of an unattended laptop from this location. Estimated loss value: $1000. Reported on 11/05/16 at 7:58 a.m. INTERSECTION OF WHITIS AVE AND DEAN KEETONST Public Intoxication: A UTPD officer noticed a woman lying on the ground near the bus stop at this location. There were several other people attempting to help the UT student sit up once they noticed the officers. As can be the case with ethanol consumption, this particular person experienced a reversion to child-like behavior and felt the need to play in the dirt at the bus stop. The officer checked on the woman and found that she did not need medical attention. Fortunately, the woman had the good judgement to locate several sober friends who were able to take care of her and officers released her to those friends. Occurred on 11/106/16 at 12:28 a.m. 2100 BLOCK OF UNIVERSITY AVE Public Intoxication: UTPD officers noticed a male subject near the intersection who appeared to have difficulty dealing with the gravitational pull of the Earth. When the UT student approached the crosswalk near this location, he stared at it for some time. UTPD officers approached the man and viewed the crosswalk with him. When they did not discover anything profound or unusual in the painted crosswalk, they spoke to the man and found that he had recently been at a local drinking establishment. Despite the man's slurred speech and propensity for staring at traffic markings, the officers were able to locate a sober adult who agreed to assume care, custody, and control of the man until he sobered up. Occurred on 11/06/16 at 2:02 a.m. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Public Intoxication: A UTPD officer who was patrolling this area on foot heard what he believed was a fight. When he turned the corner, he saw one UT student who was dragging another UT student by the arms. The woman who was being dragged was yelling and calling the other woman very rude names. The officer commanded them to stop so he could investigate. The woman who was being dragged had difficulty sitting upright and continued to call everyone present rude and hurtful names. Officers were able to locate a sober adult who could help take care of the woman until she sobered up. Occurred on 11/06/16 at 3:11 a.m. 1900 BLOCK OF SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A UTPD officer noticed a vehicle perform an illegal lane change behind his patrol car. When the vehicle pulled up next to the patrol car, the non-UT driver stared intently at the officer until the light changed. The officer decided to follow the man who was acting so strangely and noticed that the driver was unable to stay in one lane and ran a red light. While the officer looked for a safe place to pull the vehicle over, the car pulled up next to an Austin Police Department vehicle and then ran another light while staring intently at the APD officer. Both officers stopped the vehicle to investigate the driver's strange behavior. The driver had difficulty standing and mumbled constantly about an employer that he would not name. When the officers conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, the man produced a spoon from his back pocket and attempted to administer the tests on himself. The officers determined that the man was too intoxicated to safely operate a spoon, let alone a motor vehicle, and placed him under arrest. The spoon also was also entrusted to the staff of the Travis County Jail.
