When the officer approached the vehicle to inform the driver that he was violating the Texas Traffic Code, he was struck by a strong odor of marijuana. Instead of ordering the driver to turn around, the officer now detained everyone in the car and searched it. The officer located a 9mm handgun with only one bullet, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, and several items clearly intended to help distribute the marijuana and mushrooms. Our officer followed the Golden Rule and refrained from making any Barney Fife jokes while placing the driver under arrest. Reported on 12/02/16 at 8:14 p.m. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass: a UT guard noticed a person sleeping in an area reserved for the use of UT students, staff, and faculty. Our officer responded and recognized the man because he wrote him a criminal trespass warning last week. The man was issued another written criminal trespass warning and placed under arrest. Occurred on 12/03/16 at 12:19 a.m. 2100 BLOCK OF RIO GRANDE ST Public Intoxication: A UT officer noticed a man sleeping on a bench. This drew the officer's attention because the man was sleeping sitting up with his neck bent over the back of the bench and had vomit on his face. When the officer approached the man to check on him, the man woke up, noticed the officer, and then went back to sleep. The officer woke him up again and tried to identify the man. The intoxicated man opened his wallet and began to throw money and cards from it onto the ground. From the discarded information, the officer was able to identify the man and locate a sober, responsible adult who agreed to assume care, custody, and control of the man until he sobered up.
