Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Thursday, 02/02/17 and Tuesday, 02/07/17. Frank Erwin Center 1701 Red River Street Theft: A UT student reported that she left her backpack unattended inside the building. When the student returned to her bag, she discovered that some of her property had been removed. Reported on 02/02/2017 at 05:00 pm. Crime Prevention Tip: Criminals strike wherever they are given an opportunity. Never leave your things unattended. Speedway Garage 105 E. 27th Street Theft: A UT staff member advised that two hubcaps were removed from her vehicle. The cost to replace the stolen property is estimated to be $100.00. Reported on 02/03/2017 at 01:59pm. 7-Eleven Store 1814 Guadalupe Street (Non UT-Property) Theft/Public Intoxication: An employee of the aforementioned store flagged down a patrolling UTPD officer to report a theft. The employee stated that a man entered the store, took a bottle of wine from the shelf, placed it under his coat and exited the store. The shopkeeper confronted the crook in the parking lot. The pilferer then retrieved the bottle from his coat and broke it on the ground in what some would interpret to be an admission of guilt. The thief then left the area. UTPD officers were able to quickly locate the scofflaw and detain him. While interviewing the thief, officers recognized classic symptoms of alcohol intoxication. The offender was taken into custody, charged with theft and public intoxication and then transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 02/03/2017 at 07:29 pm. 1900 Rio Grande (Non UT- Property) Driving While Intoxicated: A patrolling UTPD officers observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a one way street. In the police business, we call that kind of behavior a clue. The officer initiated a traffic stop and interviewed the driver. The officer noted the smell of alcohol and observed that the driver's speech was slurred. When the officer asked for identification, the driver fumbled through his wallet before producing a debit card. The motorist repeatedly told officers that he owns a bar and appreciates the officer's service. After performing poorly on the usual test, the operator was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. While inventorying the vehicle, officers found an open container of alcohol (another clue). The offender was spirited away to jail where he will appreciate the Travis County Deputies' service as much as the UTPD Officers' service. Occurred on 02/02/17 at 02:29 pm. Carothers Residence Hall 2501 Whitis Avenue Theft: A UT Student left personal property unattended in a common area. When the student returned to the area, the property was gone. After finishing his “business,” officers interviewed the man and observed signs of alcohol intoxication. The officers also determined that the gentleman had a warrant for his arrest. Officers took the man into custody and transported him to Travis County Central Booking where he will answer for his warrant. Additionally, the man received a brand new charge for public intoxication. Conveniently, he'll be able to address both charges at the same time when he sees the judge. Occurred on 02/05/17 at 03:09 am. Officer Murphy's Pro Tip: When you have arrest warrants hanging over you, do not draw attention to yourself by doing something like urinating in public. The best advice though is to not break the law in the first place. That way you don't have to worry about warrants for your arrest. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle. Jester West Residence Hall 201 E. 21st Street Theft: A UT student left his bicycle unsecured outside of the Wendy's location at Jester West Residence Hall. When he returned to where he left his bicycle it was gone. The estimated cost to replace the bicycle is $1,400.00. Reported on 02/05/17 at 04:10 pm. 600 E. Dean Keeton (Non UT-Property) Driving While Intoxicated: A UTPD officer observed a vehicle listing lazily across the roadway. The officer initiated a traffic stop and interviewed the driver. The officer saw an open can of beer in the vehicle and observed that the driver was slurring his speech. The motorist first told officers that he had consumed two beers but later admitted to drinking six beers. The officer was able to smell the unmistakable odor of alcohol emanating from the driver. After the standard tests, the driver was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. His Blood Alcohol Content was found to be nearly twice the legal limit. Officer Murphy's Pro-Tip: Yes, the police know what marijuana smells like. No, you're not doing a good job of hiding it from us. Yes, possession of any useable amount of marijuana is still an offense in the State of Texas. 1900 N. Interstate Highway 35 Frontage Road (Non-UT Property) Public Intoxication: A UTPD Sergeant observed a pedestrian staggering in the roadway of the I-35 frontage road.
