Report for 02/27/2017

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Thursday 02/23/17 and Monday 02/27/17. ****Bicyclist Alert**** Much of Speedway between 21st Street and 24th Street is a dismount zone. This means that all bicyclists must dismount their bicycles and walk while in the marked zone. The areas are all marked with signage. UTPD officers will be in the area conducting enforcement activities. Student Services Building 100 W. Dean Keeton Street Fraud: A UT student responded to a posting on a job website. The “employer” contacted the student and told him he would wire money into the student's bank account for work. The student was directed to send a check to the “employer” for a slightly smaller amount and keep the difference as payment for undisclosed work. The “employers” check was found to be fraudulent and the student was scammed out of thousands of dollars. The investigation is ongoing. Reported on 02/23/17 at 12:55 pm. Lot 26 2501 San Jacinto Boulevard Theft: A UT faculty member reported that his bicycle was stolen from a rack attached to his vehicle. The bicycle was not locked to the rack. The cost to replace the bicycle is estimated to be $300. Reported on 02/23/17 at 1:14 pm. 2500 Block of Guadalupe Street Possession of Marijuana (Less than 20z): A UTPD officer observed a vehicle without its headlights on near the intersection of Guadalupe and Dean Keeton. Since it was…you know…dark outside, the officer activated his blinky-flashys on the roof and stopped the vehicle. Upon approaching the vehicle the officer detected the unmistakable smell of marijuana. Officers searched the car and found the green leafy substance they were looking for. The drugs were seized and officers issued the offender a citation for possession of marijuana. Occurred on 02/23/17 at 11:18 pm. 200 Block of W. Dean Keeton Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UTPD officers responded to the area in regards to a report of an intoxicated person. Officers arrived and found (shocker) exactly that. The reporting person told officers that his friend was in danger of succumbing to alcohol poisoning. EMS responded and determined that the intoxicated woman was not in need of emergency medical assistance. The woman was released to a sober friend. The case was administratively cleared. Occurred on 02/23/17 at 11:30 pm. Brazos Garage 210 E. Martin Luther King Boulevard Public Intoxication/Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor/Criminal Mischief/Fictitious License or Certificate: UTPD officers were dispatched to the area in response to a report of a suspicious person. The person was said to be cursing and hitting parked vehicles. When officers arrived they found a highly intoxicated male next to a vehicle with fresh damage to a side view mirror (Look Blue, a clue!).The man told officers that the damaged vehicle was his (spoiler alert: it wasn't). Officers took the man into custody and found that he possessed a fictitious driver's license. The obviously fake driver's license indicated the man was over the age of 21 when in reality, he was not. As the song goes: “why you always lyin'?” Despite all of his lies, the offender was then faced with an inescapable truth: a trip to Travis County Central Booking courtesy of The University of Texas Police Department. Occurred on 02/24/17 at 02:13 AM. 2600 Block of Guadalupe Possession of Marijuana: A UTPD officer observed a vehicle proceed through a red light. In response, the officer turned on his own red (and blue) lights to stop the vehicle. The officer immediately recognized the odor of marijuana while approaching the vehicle. Not unlike every episode of “Cops” you've ever seen, the officer searched the vehicle and instantly found a small amount of marijuana. The officer issued the offender a citation and released him from the scene. Occurred on 02/24/17 at 10:30 pm. Conference Center Garage 1900 University Avenue Criminal Mischief: A UT Parking and Transportation employee advised that someone removed a parking boot from a vehicle and damaged the boot in the process. The vehicle has been identified and criminal charges are in the works. Reported on 02/25/17 at 2:35 pm. Officer Murphy's Pro-Tip: Parking tickets and boots can be aggravating but no one made you park illegally. If you remove a boot from your car, you're going to be charged with an offense and still have to pay whatever the fine was that got you booted in the first place. 200 Block of E. Martin Luther King Boulevard Driving While Intoxicated: A UTPD officer observed a vehicle crash into a curb and briefly drive on the sidewalk. The driver then attempted to get back onto the street but crashed his bumper into the ground in the attempt. The heavily damaged vehicle proceeded for a short distance before smoke began to billow from the hood. The officer activated his lights and initiated a traffic stop. When he approached the vehicle, he overserved the heavy damage to the vehicle and that the airbags had deployed. The driver looked at the officer and inquired as to why he was being stopped. The officer explained his probable cause. Much to his surprise and despite all of the damage, the deployed airbags and the smoke emanating from the car, the driver denied being a collision. The officer asked the driver to exit the vehicle and complete the usual tests. The driver performed very poorly and was taken into custody. It was later determined that the offender had no license and has had a previous conviction for Driving While Intoxicated. He was then spirited away to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 02/26 at 03:17 am. 2100 Alamo Possession of Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle/Driving While License Invalid: After observing a speeding vehicle (which also had expired registration) a UTPD officer initiated a traffic stop and stopped the vehicle. The officer was able to detect the odor of marijuana emanating from the car. He searched the vehicle but was unable to find any drugs. However, he did find an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. The officer also determined that the driver did not have a valid driver's license. The offender received citations for all of these offenses and was released from the scene. Occurred on 02/26/17 at 5:38 pm. 500 W. 28th Street Possession of Marijuana (Less than 2oz): A UTPD officer observed a vehicle traveling the wrong way on a one way street (which is extremely dangerous, by the way). The officer initiated a traffic stop and while speaking with the driver detected the odor of marijuana. The driver told officers that she possessed a small amount of marijuana. The officers located and seized the marijuana before issuing the driver a citation for it. Occurred on 02/26/17 at 7:43 pm. Department responded to 95 Alarm Reports, 3 911 Hang-ups, 57 Traffic Violations, 17 Foot Patrols, 14 Suspicious Activity Reports, 6 Assist Other Law Enforcement Agency Calls, and 58 Public Assists between Thursday 02/23/17 and Monday 02/27/17.
