Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between 05/18/2017 and 07/31/2017 Note: We're back! The Campus Watch was on break during the Freshman and Transfer Orientation process so that we could maximize the time we had with the newest members of the Longhorn Community. Today, we present a selection of significant incidents from the summer so far. Feedback Request: We love your feedback! IH-35 Frontage Fleeing or Attempt to Elude Police: A UTPD officer observed a sedan driving erratically. The officer initiated a traffic stop and the sedan appeared to pull over but then left at a high rate of speed. The officer pursued the vehicle for several blocks before the sedan finally stopped. A search of the vehicle yielded drug paraphernalia. The driver was taken into custody and transported to central booking. Occurred on 06/02/2017 at 02:11 am. 500 Block of East 23rd Street Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle: UTPD officers were dispatched to the area in regards to a report of a sounding car alarm. Officers arrived on scene and saw a male tampering with the vehicle. Upon seeing the officers, the suspect threw his belongings into the car and attempted to leave the area. Officers quickly stopped the vehicle and detained the driver. Officers determined that the vehicle was stolen. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 07/02/2017 at 02:45 am. 2200 Block of Guadalupe Street Evading Arrest or Detention/Public Intoxication: UTPD officers observed a male walking against traffic in the roadway. The officers observed signs that indicated that the person was under the influence of a narcotic. The officers attempted to stop the individual but he began to run at full speed into traffic. Officers caught the man and attempted to take him into custody. The offender violently resisted and officers were forced to deploy a Taser. The man was taken into custody, given medical attention and ultimately transported Travis County Central Booking. Medical staff determined that the intoxicant was Lysergic Acid Diethylamide. Occurred on 07/29/2017 at 01:54 am. Goldsmith Hall 310 Inner Campus Drive False Alarm or Report/Criminal Trespass: Officers responded to the area after our Police Communications Center received a call from one of our 911 Call Boxes. Officers quickly responded to the area and found a male waiting by the call box. Officers instantly recognized that the man has been issued thirteen prior criminal trespass warnings for the exact spot in which he was standing. The suspect admitted that he intentionally activated the callbox to report an emergency when in fact, one had not occurred. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 06/06/2017 at 12:46 am. Dell Seton Medical Center 1500 Red River Assault on a Public Servant: While working in the Emergency Department, a UTPD officer observed a woman, who was not a patient, become verbally abusive towards staff members. The officer explained that the behavior is not acceptable and the suspect would have to leave the premises. The suspect then attempted to spit on the officer before striking him. The officer took the suspect into custody and transported her to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 06/05/17 at 02:48 am. Potbelly's Restaurant 2316 Guadalupe Street Criminal Trespass: UTPD officers were writing a criminal trespass warning to an individual on a neighboring property when another man passed by the officers, said hello and entered the Potbelly's restaurant. The officer had personally issued the man a criminal trespass warning the day before for the property. The officer entered the restaurant and, at the request of the manager, took the suspect into custody. He was transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 07/26/17 at 2:04 pm. Dell Seton Medical Center 1500 Red River Assault on a Public Servant: An individual struck a medical staff member inside the emergency department. The offender was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 06/03/17 at 5:04 pm. 2300 Block of San Jacinto Street Theft: UTPD officers were dispatched to the area in regards to a report of a theft. The shopkeeper of a nearby cafe notified officers that an individual approached the café and stole approximately $60.00 of fresh bagels. Officers quickly located the thief and took him into custody. A search of the suspect yielded stolen passports, credit cards and other documents. He was transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 07/24/17 at 06:18 am. 2600 Block of Guadalupe Interference with Public Duties, Resisting Arrest, Public Intoxication: UTPD officers were conducting a DWI investigation and noticed that there was a group of people filming the encounter. For the purposes of safety, one officer approached the group and told them they were allowed to film but needed to stay behind a line while the investigation was occurring. The group was respectful and the officer ensured that they would have an unobstructed view of the investigation. However, two men who were not affiliated with the group or the DWI investigation approached the scene and tried to interrupt it. Officers explained that an investigation was ongoing and warned that further interruption would result in criminal arrest. The men did not heed the warning, encroached further and began to curse at officers. Despite multiple warnings, the men continued to interrupt the scene and were ultimately taken into custody. One of the men resisted violently and even after being secured in the car, proceeded to bounce his own head on the car's interior. Both men were intoxicated at the time of the arrest. They were transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 07/27/17 at 02:20 am. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 5800 calls for service (690 of those were alarms), performed 1169 traffic stops, made 198 criminal arrests, wrote 282 citations, conducted 365 foot patrols and investigated 62 welfare concerns between 05/18/17 and 07/31/17.
