Report for 10/09/2017

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between 10/2/17 and 10/9/17. Jester Residence Hall 201 E. 21st Street Public Intoxication: UTPD officers were dispatched to the residence hall after a report of a suspicious male who was said to be knocking on individual room doors. Officers arrived and quickly located the suspect. The suspect, who was not UT-affiliated, was standing in the doorway of a room that belonged to three female UT students. Officers observed that suspect had urinated and drooled on himself, had bloodshot eyes and would go on to tell officers that he was in San Marcos, not Austin. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with Public Intoxication. He was transported to Travis County Central Booking without incident. It was later determined that he was and a student from a major university in San Marcos were visiting a mutual friend who resided in the dorm. Occurred on 10/08/17 at 04:25 am. 1400 Block of IH-35 Frontage Road Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor: A UTPD officer observed vehicle blocking a turn lane despite the traffic signal displaying a green light. The officer initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver. The driver, a UT student, explained that he was on the way home from a party and had been drinking alcoholic beverages. The officer conducted the standardized test and determined that the driver had been drinking but was likely not impaired. However, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code forbids minors from operating a motor vehicle after consuming any amount of alcohol. The driver was issued a citation for DUI-Minor and his vehicle was towed and impounded. Occurred on 10/08/17 at 03:55 am. 2500 Block of Seton Avenue Assault by Contact/Evading Arrest or Detention: Two UTPD officers were on patrol together when they observed a male (who was not UT affiliated) consuming alcohol in a public place. The suspect finished his beer then threw the can at a parked and unattended vehicle. Upon seeing this behavior, officers detained the man. The suspect then pushed one of the officers and fled the scene. Officers gave chase and quickly located him. The officers took the suspect into custody and transported him to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 10/7/17 at 8:04 pm. 1000 Block of E. Manor Road Possession of Marijuana/Unlawful Carrying of Weapons: A UTPD officer observed a vehicle failing to yield the right of way to another vehicle which nearly caused a collision. The officer stopped the vehicle and the driver instantly opened the door. The officer ordered the driver to close the door. The driver complied. Shortly contacting the driver, the driver (who was not UT-affiliated) moved a blanket from his passenger seat and displayed a loaded semi-automatic handgun. The officer ordered the man to not reach for the gun. The driver did not heed the officers warning and reached for the weapon. Reacting to the potential lethal threat, the officer put the driver at gunpoint. The officer ordered the driver to exit the vehicle and then placed him in handcuffs. A search of the vehicle yielded marijuana, scales and other paraphernalia. The driver was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 10/7/17 at 9:42 am. 2400 Block of N. IH-35 Frontage Road Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 1, Possession of Dangerous Drug, Failure to Identify, Possession of More than One Valid Driver's License: A UTPD officer observed a vehicle fail to stop at a red light. The officer initiated a traffic stop and tried to identify the driver. The driver (not UT affiliated) gave officers a name and date of birth, but officers were not able to find a record with that information. The driver gave officers permission to search the inside of the car. The search yielded the presence of methamphetamine, a methamphetamine pipe and prescription pills (which he did not have a prescription for). Officers ultimately established the driver's identity and learned that (surprise) he had a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. The passenger was found to have two Texas Driver's Licenses – one belonging to her and another belonging to someone not on scene. She was also taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 10/06/2017 at 10:33 pm. 2500 Block of Guadalupe Street Theft, Evading Arrest or Detention, Criminal Trespass, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instrument: A bicycle owned by The University of Texas that can be easily tracked by our Police Communications Operators was stolen from a bike rack near Communications Building B. Officers quickly located the bicycle and its rider, who was not authorized to be riding the bicycle. Officers ordered the suspect to stop. The suspect (who was not-UT affiliated) disregarded the instruction of the officers and fled the area. The officers gave chase and recognized the man as someone who they knew to have a violent history and was known to assault police officers. While attempting to flee, the suspect crashed the bicycle before running away. After a short run, officers caught up with the man and ordered him to stop. The suspect then began to move aggressively towards the nearest officer. That officer, knowing the suspects background and observing hostile action, drew his Taser and ordered the man to lie on the ground. The suspect complied and was quickly taken into custody. A search yielded a knife, drug paraphernalia and wire cutters – presumably used to cut the bicycle's lock. The suspect was also the subject of multiple prior criminal trespass warnings. He was transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 10/05/17 at 9:08 pm. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 818 calls for service (168 of those were alarms), performed 138 traffic stops, made 24 criminal arrests, conducted 61 foot patrols and investigated 15 welfare concerns between 10/2/17 and 10/9/17.
