Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between 11/20/17 and 11/27/17. Property Crime Alert: We've seen a recent increase in burglary of motor vehicles. Remember to lock your car doors, take your keys and hide any property you have to leave in your car. We've also noticed a string of bicycle thefts. Remember to use a U-Lock in combination with a strong chain. Secure the U-Lock around the frame, front tire and bicycle rack. Secure the chain through the rack, frame and back tire. Make your bicycle harder to steal than the ones around it. As always, if you see something, say something. Call 911 anytime you feel threatened or are witnessing a crime in progress. 1800 Block of Leona Street Driving While Intoxicated with an Open Container in Vehicle & Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 1 (Crack Cocaine): A UTPD officer observed a vehicle blocking the roadway. The officer also noticed that the driver was asleep. The suspect (who was not UT affiliated) was so soundly asleep that the officer had time to place a block on the wheels to prevent the driver from being startled and hitting the accelerator. The officer then woke the driver. The driver (who exhibited signs of intoxication) pointed to a nearby house and stated he was driving home. The officer noticed that there was an open beer inside the car. The driver performed poorly on the standard tests and was taken into custody. A search incidental to arrest yielded 10 crack cocaine rocks weighing more than 2 grams. Occurred on 11/23/17 at 2:25 am. 1800 Block of Trinity Street Assault Causes Bodily Injury & Criminal Mischief: Officers responded to the area in regards to a report of an assault in progress. They quickly located the victim who was bloodied. The victim reported that a male and a female punched and kicked him near a portable restroom. His glasses were broken during the assault. Officers quickly located the suspects and detained them (neither was UT affiliated). The two were charged with assault and criminal mischief and taken to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 11/24/17 at 6:42 pm. Communications Building B 2504 Whitis Avenue Theft, Possession of Substance in Penalty Group 2 & Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A bicycle owned by The University of Texas at Austin which was easily tracked was removed without permission from a rack. Police Communications operators easily tracked the bicycles movements and relayed it to officers. Officers then quickly located the bicycle and its would-be thief (not UT affiliated). After the usual lies, the offender was taken into custody and the bicycle was recovered. A search incidental to arrest yielded Synthetic Cannabinoids (K2) and related paraphernalia. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 615 calls for service (124 of those were alarms), performed 80 traffic stops, made 22 criminal arrests, conducted 81 foot patrols and investigated 5 welfare concerns between 11/20/17 and 11/27/17.
