Report for 12/11/2017

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between 11/27/17 and 12/04/17. Property Crime Alert: We've seen a recent increase in burglary of motor vehicles. Remember to lock your car doors, take your keys and hide any property you have to leave in your car. We've also noticed a string of bicycle thefts. Remember to use a U-Lock in combination with a strong chain. Secure the U-Lock around the frame, front tire and bicycle rack. Secure the chain through the rack, frame and back tire. Make your bicycle harder to steal than the ones around it. As always, if you see something, say something. Call 911 anytime you feel threatened or are witnessing a crime in progress. 1200 Block of S. IH-35 Frontage Road Possession of Marijuana, Driving While License Invalid & Warrant Arrest: A UTPD officer observed a vehicle with an expired license plate. The officer initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver (not UT affiliated). Upon speaking with the driver, the officer detected the smell of what he believed to be the odor of fresh marijuana. The officer saw, in plain view, two open beer bottles. The officer determined that the driver was not intoxicated but did have several outstanding misdemeanor warrants. He was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. The officer would ultimately find marijuana inside the car during a search. Occurred on 11/27/17 at 8:47 pm. Dell Seton Medical Center 1500 Red River Criminal Mischief, Assault: Physical Contact (x2) & Assault: Public Servant (Security Officer): While being treated at the hospital, a patient (who had ingested methamphetamine before arriving at the facility) began punching the wall and damaging property. Seton Security officers and UTPD officers responded to the room. The patient kicked one security guard before spitting on two others. After being released from the hospital, UTPD officers transported the individual to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 12/01/17 at 1:23 am. Jester Residence Hall 201 E. 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UTPD security guard reported that he observed an unconscious male inside the Malcom X Lounge inside Jester Academic. Officers responded, identified the man and determined that he was not affiliated with UT. He also smelled of metabolized alcohol and his clothes were disheveled. The man argued that he was in East Austin and that Mickey Mouse was, in fact, a cat. Officers determined that the man may have been a danger to himself because of his intoxication. He was taken into custody and transported to the jail. Occurred on 12/02/17 at 07:06 am. Lot 118 1700 Red River Reckless Driving, Theft of Service & Public Intoxication: A Red Dodge Challenger entered the parking lot by driving at high speeds on the sidewalk nearly striking several pedestrians. The vehicle hit a curb and blew out one of its tires. The driver then left the vehicle in an aisle of the parking lot and walked towards the Frank Erwin Center, presumably to attend the Dead and Company Concert. Officers responded to the area but were unable to locate the driver. They spoke with witnesses and impounded the vehicle. After the concert, the driver (who was highly intoxicated) returned to the scene and explained to officers that he was looking for his Dodge Challenger so he could drive home. As you might expect, he was taken into custody and transported to Travis County Central Booking. Occurred on 12/2/17 at 7:00pm. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 689 calls for service, performed 112 traffic stops, made 9 criminal arrests, conducted 89 foot patrols and investigated 8 welfare concerns between 11/27/17 and 12/04/17.
