Crime Prevention Tip of the Week: Avoid sleeping in public areas The majority of crimes are crimes of opportunity in which victims lack general awareness. Sleeping in common areas on campus, such as the Texas Union or a library, provides criminals an opportunity to take advantage of exhausted students. If you must rest your eyes, wrap your arms around your belongings or keep your belongings under your head like a pillow. Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus criminal activity reported to or observed by The University of Texas At Austin Police Department Patrol Officers between Sunday 8/5/18 and Saturday 08/11/18. 8/05/2018 at 10:38 p.m., 700 Lavaca St. Driving While Intoxicated: A patrolling UTPD officer observed a vehicle driving southbound on Lavaca Street, a northbound-only road. The officer initiated a traffic stop. The driver, who smelled of alcohol, performed the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. The investigating officer determined that the driver was intoxicated and placed her under arrest for Driving While Intoxicated. 8/07/2018 at 9:52 a.m., 1900 Guadalupe Street Assist Outside Agency, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving While License Invalid: A patrolling UTPD officer observed a vehicle traveling in the bus lane on Lavaca Street to turn left onto Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The officer initiated a traffic stop at 1900 Guadalupe Street. A license check showed the driver’s license was suspended and the vehicle had no insurance. Upon further investigation, the officer determined the man had a warrant for possession of marijuana. The man consented to a search of his person and the officer located a glass pipe in the man’s pocket. The man advised that the pipe was used for smoking methamphetamine. The subject was arrested for the outstanding warrant, and was also charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Driving While License Invalid. 8/8/2018 at 7:31 a.m., 2308 Whitis Avenue. Criminal Trespass Warning: A UTPD officer was dispatched to a report of a person sleeping at the intersection of 24th Street and Whitis Avenue, near the Barbara Jordan statue. Responding officers located a non-UT affiliated woman next to the statue. The woman was issued a criminal trespass warning for campus and left the area. The University of Texas Police Department responded to 163 Alarm Activations, 134 Foot Patrols, 79 Traffic Violations, 3 Welfare Concerns and 25 Suspicious Activity Reports between Sunday 8/05/18 and Saturday 08/11/18.
